Two boards, two grading systems
Two awarding bodies account for most IGCSE entries in African international schools. Cambridge IGCSE is graded A* to G for most syllabuses and tiers many subjects into Core and Extended papers: a Core candidate cannot be awarded above a C. Pearson Edexcel’s International GCSE is graded 9 to 1 and handles tiering differently — untiered in some subjects, Foundation and Higher in others.
That means two students in the same year, in the same subject, can be preparing for papers of different lengths, with or without a practical exam, under different grade ceilings. What the lessons work on
The entry tier
Whether a student should be entered for Extended rather than Core — or Higher rather than Foundation — and what the work needs to show for the school to agree.
Command words and mark schemes
IGCSE papers reward precise answers to “describe”, “explain” and “suggest”. Students learn the difference from their own board’s mark schemes.
Practical skills
Cambridge sciences examine practical skills in a practical exam or an Alternative to Practical paper; Pearson examines them inside the written papers. Both need real preparation.
The bridge to A Level or IB
Strong IGCSE foundations in maths and the sciences are what make the first year of A Level or the IB manageable, so lessons in Year 11 keep an eye on what comes next.
Checking your board and syllabus code
Your syllabus code is printed on past papers and on the school’s exam entries — for example 0610 is Cambridge IGCSE Biology, while Pearson codes begin with 4. Send it to us before the first lesson, and the tutor will arrive prepared for your exact papers.
How IGCSE preparation works
Every lesson is live, online and 90 minutes long, scheduled in your own time zone. Lessons are taught in English, the language the exam is sat in.

First-lesson assessment
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
Written plan
After the first lesson you receive a written plan: which units come first, how many lessons that realistically takes before your exams, and where past papers enter. It is revised as school covers new material.
Lessons and review
Each lesson ends with set work and a target for the next one. Families receive progress notes, and the plan is re-read against every new score rather than followed blindly.
