IGCSE Business Tutoring, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel
IGCSE Business — Business Studies at Cambridge until the syllabus was renamed for the 2027 exams — rewards students who apply ideas to the firm in front of them rather than recite textbook points. Almost every question is set in a context, from a short data extract to a full case study, and the same correct point can earn very different credit depending on whether it is about that business.

How IGCSE Business is assessed, board by board
2 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.

- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are the two IGCSE boards covered here. Some schools use OxfordAQA International GCSEs, which are examined differently again; if that is your board, tell us on the intro call and we will confirm tutor availability for your specification before you book.

Where IGCSE Business marks are usually lost
Answers that fit any firm
Both boards set questions on a specific business — a case study at Cambridge, small-business and large-business scenarios at Pearson — and Cambridge has increased the weight of application in its new syllabus. Generic points such as “motivation raises productivity” tend to earn knowledge credit only. Using the firm’s product, size, customers or figures from the data is what turns a correct point into an applied one.
Right formula, misread figures
Break-even, cash-flow forecasts, profit margins and ratios appear on both boards, and Pearson allows a calculator in both papers. Pearson supplies its ratio formulae in the exam and Cambridge lists its formulas and ratios in the syllabus, so remembering them is rarely the problem. Marks go on reading: total cost used where variable cost was needed, a monthly figure treated as annual, an opening balance left out of a forecast.
Recommendations with no reason
Final questions often ask which of two options a business should choose, or whether a decision was right. Students describe both options well, then pick one in a single sentence. Evaluation credit goes to a decision that weighs the options against each other in this business’s situation and says what the choice depends on; a recommendation without justification, or none at all, leaves those marks behind.
How we teach IGCSE Business
A tutor begins with the board and, for Cambridge, with the Business syllabus examined from 2027, which added topics on technology and sustainable production, digital communication, and a list of formulas and ratios. Each topic is learned in three layers: the concept, how it plays out in a real business, and the judgement — when it is the right choice and when it is not. Break-even, cash flow and ratio calculations are practised from untidy data until the student reads the question before reaching for a formula. Cambridge candidates rehearse case-study papers with the insert and its appendices; Pearson candidates practise for both the small-business and the large-business paper, on screen if that is how they will sit. Every practice answer is checked for one thing first: is it about this business?
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
