IGCSE Geography Tutoring, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel
IGCSE Geography asks students to explain processes and then apply them to real places, and the marks for longer answers depend on detailed, named examples rather than general statements. It is also a skills subject, with maps, graphs, photographs and fieldwork methods examined alongside the content.
Short answer
IGCSE Geography is offered online, one-to-one.

How IGCSE Geography is assessed, board by board
2 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.
Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Physical Geography — Topics 1–5 | 36% | 1 hour 45 min | 75 marks | structured questions and data response |
| Paper 2: Human Geography | 36% | 1 hour 45 min | 75 marks | structured questions and data response |
| Component 3: Coursework — A fieldwork investigation; an alternative to Paper 4 | 28% | Assessed in school | — | coursework and independent investigation |
| Paper 4: Geographical Investigations — A written paper about fieldwork, for schools that do not enter for coursework | 28% | 1 hour 30 min | 60 marks | data response and independent investigation |
- Whether your school enters for coursework or for Paper 4 changes 28% of the grade and most of the year’s workload. Paper 4 still assumes real fieldwork has been done: it asks students to interpret data collection they are expected to recognise.

Pearson Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Geography (4GE1)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Physical Geography | 40% | 1 hour 10 min | 70 marks | structured questions and data response |
| Paper 2: Human Geography | 60% | 1 hour 45 min | 105 marks | structured questions, data response and essay |
- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
- The two papers are not equal: human geography carries 60% and runs to an hour and three quarters, while physical geography is 70 minutes. A revision plan that splits time evenly between them is already wrong.

What IGCSE Geography covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.
Rivers and coasts
River processes and landforms · Causes and impacts of river flooding · Coastal processes and landforms · Coastal opportunities, hazards and management
Hazards, ecosystems and climate
Plate boundaries, earthquakes and volcanoes · Reducing the impacts of tectonic hazards · Ecosystems under threat and their management · Causes and impacts of climate change · Responses to climate change
Population and urban change
Population growth and structure · Causes and impacts of migration · Urbanisation and urban land use · Managing the growth of cities
Development and economies
Measuring development · Uneven development between and within countries · Changing employment structures · Globalisation and transnational corporations · Energy supply and demand
Geographical skills
Map reading: grid references, scale, direction and contours · Constructing and interpreting graphs and diagrams · Photographs and satellite images · Basic statistics in geography
Fieldwork and enquiry
Questions and hypotheses · Primary and secondary data collection · Processing and presenting data · Conclusions and evaluation
Where IGCSE Geography marks are usually lost
General statements where a named example is needed
Cambridge asks for detailed specific examples and Pearson for in-depth case studies, and longer answers are credited on how well they use them. “Many people in Africa move to cities” earns little; a named city, with the reasons, figures and consequences the student has learned, earns credit. Each example the syllabus asks for, known in depth, outperforms several known superficially.
Map and graph questions answered from memory
Skills questions — grid references, distances, gradients, a climate graph or a population pyramid — reward exact readings from the resource provided, with units. Students often answer from general knowledge instead, or reverse eastings and northings in a grid reference. Cambridge now tests these skills across all its components rather than in a separate skills paper, so they cannot be revised in one block.
Fieldwork questions answered in the abstract
Both boards examine fieldwork in writing: Pearson through fieldwork questions in each paper, Cambridge through Paper 4 for schools that do not enter coursework. Questions ask why a sampling method was chosen, how a hypothesis was tested and how reliable the results were. Students who cannot describe a method in practical detail answer in generalities and lose the marks for method and evaluation.
IGCSE Geography coursework
Only Cambridge offers coursework, as an alternative to Paper 4, and the school decides whether to use it; Pearson’s Geography has none and examines fieldwork in its written papers. The Cambridge assignment is one fieldwork investigation set by the teacher and following the route to geographical enquiry: a question or hypothesis, data collection — usually carried out as a group, mainly primary data supported by secondary sources — and then individual presentation, analysis, conclusions and evaluation. A tutor can teach data presentation and analysis on separate data sets and explain the criteria; Cambridge does not allow detailed advice on improving the work itself.
A tutor can explain the criteria, question a draft and point to what is weak. The research, the writing and every decision in it stay the student’s own, as the awarding body’s rules require.
How we teach IGCSE Geography
A tutor first confirms the board and route: for Pearson, which physical and human topics the school teaches, which fieldwork topics and which global issue; for Cambridge, whether the school uses coursework or Paper 4 under the syllabus revised for first examination in 2027. Each topic is taught as processes, impacts and responses, with the detailed examples the syllabus asks for, each condensed by the student into a page of specific facts. Map, graph and image skills are practised in every lesson rather than left to the end. Longer answers are planned around the command word and marked against the published levels, and fieldwork methods are taught as practical decisions the student can justify.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
