IGCSE Accounting Tutoring, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel

IGCSE Accounting is unforgiving in a way few subjects are: a correct figure in the wrong place, a missing heading or a debit that should have been a credit can undo an otherwise sound answer. It is also cumulative — errors, adjustments and final accounts all assume that double entry has become automatic.

Short answer

IGCSE Accounting is offered online, one-to-one.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 95 per lesson; lessons are booked singly or in packages.

No group class runs for this exam.

How IGCSE Accounting is assessed, board by board

2 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.

  • Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
  • Two thirds of the Pearson grade sits in the first paper; Cambridge splits 30/70 across a multiple-choice paper and a structured one. Either way the marks turn on format precision — a correct figure in the wrong statement scores nothing on both boards.

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are the two IGCSE boards covered here. Some schools use OxfordAQA International GCSEs, which are examined differently again; if that is your board, tell us on the intro call and we will confirm tutor availability for your specification before you book.

What IGCSE Accounting covers

The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.

Where IGCSE Accounting marks are usually lost

  • Debits and credits by guesswork

Many students learn double entry as a list of rules and then guess when a transaction looks unfamiliar: a return, a discount, goods taken for the owner’s own use, the disposal of a non-current asset. The error then travels into the trial balance, the control accounts and the final statements. The fix is knowing what each account represents, so an entry can be reasoned out rather than recalled.

  • Right figures, wrong layout

Both specifications expect information presented in an appropriate accounting form, and final statements are where that bites. Headings and dates, items in the correct section, subtotals in the right place, current and non-current items kept apart: a student who nets off figures that should appear separately, or puts an adjustment under the wrong heading, can lose credit even when the final profit is right.

  • Ratios calculated, never explained

Students compute the gross profit margin, the current ratio or the return on capital employed correctly, write “the ratio has increased” and stop. Interpretation means saying why — what happened to sales, costs, inventory or borrowing to cause the movement — and what it means for the owner, a lender or a partner. Cambridge also covers comparing two businesses, with the problems that raises, and the limitations of accounting statements.

How we teach IGCSE Accounting

A tutor first checks the board, because the content differs at the edges: Cambridge includes limited companies and clubs and societies, while Pearson’s partnership work applies the Partnership Act rules on salaries, interest and profit sharing. The teaching is then sequential: double entry and books of prime entry until they are automatic; the trial balance, errors and suspense accounts, control accounts and bank reconciliation; then adjustments and final statements. Topics are practised through full questions rather than fragments, because the real difficulty is carrying several adjustments through one set of accounts. Ethics and accounting technology, on both boards’ syllabuses, are learned as short written answers. Cambridge candidates also drill multiple-choice questions, which from 2027 fill a longer paper. Mistakes are logged by type, so a recurring one is fixed at its source.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Cambridge revised the syllabus for first examination in 2027. New content covers ethical considerations and technology and sustainability, under a final topic renamed Accounting concepts and modern practice; the accounting ratios were updated and the list of international standards removed. The multiple-choice paper now has more questions and more time, while the structured paper is unchanged. Older structured papers remain good practice; Cambridge’s updated specimen materials show the current multiple-choice format.

The core is shared: double entry, the trial balance and its errors, control accounts, bank reconciliation, end-of-period adjustments, sole trader and partnership accounts, manufacturing accounts, incomplete records and ratios, with ethics and accounting technology now on both. Cambridge goes further into limited companies and clubs and societies. Pearson divides the course between a bookkeeping paper and a financial statements paper, while Cambridge examines everything through a multiple-choice paper and a structured paper.

A few habits catch most errors: checking that every entry has an equal and opposite side, that the statement of financial position balances, and that each adjustment has been applied twice — once in the statement of profit or loss and once in the statement of financial position. When a statement will not balance, move on and return later rather than lose time; clear workings still show the examiner everything that was done correctly.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 100; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 95 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
