IGCSE English as a Second Language Tutoring, Cambridge International
IGCSE English as a Second Language tests English as it is used — articles, emails, recorded conversations, a spoken interview — and almost every task turns on reading or hearing exactly what is asked. Confident speakers tend to lose marks to careless detail in reading and listening, while careful students lose them to writing that covers the prompts too thinly.

How IGCSE English as a Second Language is assessed, board by board
This page covers one specification for this subject: Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511). It is set out below from the board's own document. If your school enters you with a different board, tell us on the intro call and we will work from that board's specification instead.
Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Component 1: Reading and Writing | 70% | 2 hours | 60 marks | comprehension and essay |
| Component 2: Listening — Approximately 50 minutes, including six minutes to transfer answers | 30% | 50 min | 40 marks | comprehension |
| Component 3: Speaking — Approximately 10–15 minutes, marked in school and moderated by Cambridge | — | Assessed in school | 40 marks | coursework |
- The syllabus number decides what Speaking counts for. On 0510 it is endorsed separately and reported as a grade of its own; on 0511 it counts towards the overall grade. Two students with the same marks can therefore end with different certificates depending on which one their school entered them for.
- Across Francophone and North African schools this is often the English route taken, while in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa First Language English is the norm. The two are not interchangeable: some universities and some sixth forms ask specifically for First Language English. Check the requirement before choosing the easier entry.

Where IGCSE English as a Second Language marks are usually lost
Nearly the right detail
Many reading questions want one precise piece of information: a name, a time, a reason. Writing the neighbouring detail, or adding a wrong extra word to a correct one, can cost the mark. In listening every question is multiple choice and each recording is heard twice; the second hearing is for checking a choice already made, not for starting from scratch.
Prompts covered in a single line each
Both writing tasks give short prompts and are marked for content and for language. Touching each prompt in one sentence earns little for development, while developing some well and leaving one out loses marks for task fulfilment. Register matters too: the first task is an informal email, for example to a friend or relative, the second a more formal piece for a stated reader.
Leaving the speaking test to chance
The speaking test is an interview, a short talk after preparation time and a discussion that extends the topic. Students who answer in single sentences, or recite a memorised speech that ignores the topic given, perform below their real level. On 0510 speaking is graded separately, but on 0511 it counts towards the overall grade, so a weak performance changes the main result.
How we teach IGCSE English as a Second Language
A tutor first confirms whether the school enters students for 0510 or 0511, since that decides how much weight speaking preparation carries. Reading is taught by task type — short answers, multiple matching, note completion, multiple choice — with practice in locating the line that answers each question and in inferring attitudes that are only implied. Writing lessons alternate informal emails with articles, reports, reviews and essays, and every draft is checked against the prompts and the register before the language is corrected. Listening practice uses varied recordings and builds the habit of reading the options before the audio begins. For speaking, students rehearse a structured short talk after brief preparation and learn to extend answers with reasons and examples. Grammar and vocabulary are taught as they arise in the student’s own work.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
