Online Tutors for International Exams, for Students in South Africa
Most students in South Africa finish school with the National Senior Certificate, written through the Department of Basic Education or the IEB, while others follow Cambridge or IB routes. As online tutors, we prepare students for the international exams that sit alongside those routes, live online, in English, and timed around a school year that runs from January to December.
- Live online lessons on South African Standard Time (UTC+2)
- Lessons taught in English
- Plans built around NSC and IEB exam dates

How secondary school ends in South Africa
Grade 12, often called matric, ends in different exams depending on the school. The certificate a student holds decides what a South African university asks for next, and how universities abroad will assess it.
| Route | Exam | Run by | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public schools, national curriculum | National Senior Certificate (NSC), final exams in October and November | Department of Basic Education, with the provincial education departments | Bachelor’s study needs at least an achievement rating of 4 (50–59%) in four subjects, then each university’s own points score and subject rules |
| Schools registered with the IEB | IEB National Senior Certificate | Independent Examinations Board (IEB), quality-assured by Umalusi | An NSC based on the same national curriculum, with examinations provided by the IEB |
| British curriculum | Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level (June and November series) | Cambridge International | For South African universities, a Matriculation Board exemption certificate; A Levels are also used for UK applications |
| IB Diploma | IB final exams in the May or November session, depending on the school | International Baccalaureate | Offered by some schools in South Africa; for South African universities, the Matriculation Board sets exemption conditions for the IB Diploma and the IB Certificate |

Where students apply, and what is usually asked
Requirements differ by university and by course, and they change between admissions cycles. The rows below describe the general pattern; for any university on your list, check the university’s international entry requirements for the year you apply.
| Destination | What is usually asked | Tests that may come in |
|---|---|---|
| South African universities | An NSC endorsed for bachelor’s study plus the Admission Point Score (APS) and subjects the course sets. Each university calculates the APS its own way: Wits counts the best seven subjects including Life Orientation, with two extra points for English and Mathematics at 60% or above; UCT’s guidelines for 2027 admission add the six best percentages and leave Life Orientation out | National Benchmark Tests where a university asks for them, as UCT does for all undergraduate programmes for 2027 admission |
| South African universities, with Cambridge or IB results | An exemption certificate from the Matriculation Board of Universities South Africa, which assesses non-NSC school-leaving qualifications, followed by the university’s own requirements | The same as for NSC holders, depending on the university |
| United Kingdom | A Levels or the IB Diploma; some universities also consider a high-scoring NSC for direct entry, as the University of Manchester does | IELTS or TOEFL, though some universities accept a high NSC or IEB English grade instead |
| United States | The full secondary-school record, essays and references; some selective universities require test scores again, others are test-optional | SAT or ACT where required; AP scores support an application; English test rules vary |

Where the exam calendars collide
South Africa’s school year runs from January to December, so the NSC is written at the end of the calendar year, months after the May and June international series. The 2027 NSC timetable had not been published when this page was checked; the 2026 row shows this year’s pattern.
| When | South African school calendar | International exams in the same window |
|---|---|---|
| October–November 2026 | NSC final exams, 13 October to 25 November 2026 | SAT on 7 November 2026, inside the NSC exam weeks; Cambridge November series, timetabled exams from late September to mid-November |
| December 2026–January 2027 | NSC results announced on 11 January 2027; learners return for the 2027 school year on 13 January | SAT on 5 December 2026 |
| Term 1 2027 (13 January to 19 March) | Teaching term | SAT on 6 March 2027; registration deadline 19 February 2027 |
| Term 2 2027 (6 April to 25 June) | Teaching term | SAT on 1 May and 5 June 2027; AP Exams 3–7 and 10–14 May 2027, late testing 17–21 May; IB May session, at schools that use it; Cambridge June series |
| Term 3 2027 (July to September) | Teaching term, the last full term before Grade 12 finals | College Board’s anticipated 2027–28 SAT dates include 28 August and 18 September 2027; no AP dates. A window for SAT or IELTS preparation away from final exams |
| Term 4 2027 (October to December) | NSC final exams for the class of 2027; dates to be confirmed by the DBE | Anticipated SAT dates of 9 October and 6 November 2027; IB November session, at schools that use it; Cambridge November series, on the 2026 pattern from late September to mid-November |
Sources: Department of Basic Education, 2026 October/November NSC timetable and the 2027 calendar for public schools published in the Government Gazette; College Board, SAT dates and deadlines (including anticipated 2027–28 dates) and AP exam dates; Cambridge International, 2026 calendar and key dates for the November 2026 series; IB, examination sessions. Checked 8 October 2026. Anticipated SAT dates can change. The government’s summary page shows different dates for Terms 3 and 4, and independent schools set their own terms, so confirm term dates with the school and 2027 exam dates with the DBE or the IEB.
Sitting international tests from South Africa
The British Council runs IELTS in South Africa; check its official South African pages for current test locations, dates and seats. For the SAT, use College Board’s own test centre search before choosing a date, because a full centre can change the whole plan.
Timing works differently here from countries that sit their school-leaving exams in May and June. The international May and June series fall in Term 2, months before NSC finals, while the November SAT falls inside the NSC exam weeks. Universities may also look at Grade 11 final and Grade 12 preliminary marks, as UCT’s guidelines state, so a test plan should not pull time from those exams either.
How online lessons work from South Africa
Send an enquiry
Write in English, French or Arabic, with the school route, the exams in view and the universities on the list. We answer in the language you write in.
Free intro call
A conversation, not a test, about the exam dates, the destinations and how much time school leaves. For the SAT or GMAT, a free full-length diagnostic follows before any plan; for IGCSE, IB and AP, the first lesson includes an assessment.
A plan around the South African calendar
Lessons are scheduled in South African time. South Africa stays on South African Standard Time, 2 hours ahead of UTC, all year with no summer time, so a lesson time does not move between seasons.
Live lessons in English
Lessons are live online and taught in English. A tutor who can also explain a point in French or Arabic is confirmed case by case and never promised.
Prices before you commit
Open your programme’s pricing page to compare packages, lesson rates and available group courses.
What we do not claim
A page about a country should say what the company is and is not in that country.
No office in South Africa
Lessons are live online. There is no Johannesburg or Cape Town centre, and no address to visit.
No South African results or testimonials
We do not publish scores, admissions or reviews from students in South Africa, and we do not promise a score or a university place.
No partnerships or affiliations
We have no partnership with any South African school or university and are not affiliated with the Department of Basic Education, the IEB, Umalusi, Universities South Africa, Cambridge, the IB or College Board.
No NSC course and no exemption service
Our programmes cover international exams and school qualifications such as IGCSE and A Level. Subject work often helps with NSC papers, but we do not run an NSC or IEB programme, and we do not apply to the Matriculation Board on anyone’s behalf.
