IGCSE Mathematics Tutoring, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel
IGCSE Mathematics is less about knowing methods than about choosing and using them accurately, on questions that mix several topics and give no hint of which technique to reach for. Cambridge 0580 now has a non-calculator paper at each tier, so arithmetic a student has handed to a machine for years has become a direct source of lost marks.

How IGCSE Mathematics is assessed, board by board
3 specifications from 2 awarding bodies are shown here, and they are not examined the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your specification — its code is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one specification's paper as though it applied to all of them.
Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Core): Non-calculator — No calculator allowed | 50% | 1 hour 30 min | 80 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 3 (Core): Calculator — Scientific calculator required | 50% | 1 hour 30 min | 80 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 2 (Extended): Non-calculator — No calculator allowed | 50% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
| Paper 4 (Extended): Calculator — Scientific calculator required | 50% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
- Cambridge tiers this subject. Core candidates sit the Core papers and can be awarded grades C to G; Extended candidates sit the Extended papers and can be awarded A* to G. A student entered for Core cannot be given a grade above a C whatever they write, so if a sixth form is asking for a B in Mathematics, the entry tier is the first thing to check — and schools will usually still move a student between tiers if the work supports it.
- Half of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is now sat without a calculator. Students who have done every piece of practice with one in their hand are preparing for the other half only, and arithmetic fluency has become a marks issue rather than a matter of style.

Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics (0607)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Core): Non-calculator | 40% | 1 hour 15 min | 60 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 3 (Core): Calculator — Graphic display calculator required | 40% | 1 hour 15 min | 60 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 5 (Core): Investigation | 20% | 1 hour 15 min | 40 marks | independent investigation and problem solving |
| Paper 2 (Extended): Non-calculator | 40% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 4 (Extended): Calculator — Graphic display calculator required | 40% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 6 (Extended): Investigation and Modelling | 20% | 1 hour 30 min | 50 marks | independent investigation and problem solving |
- This is a different qualification from 0580, not a variant of it: it requires a graphic display calculator and it examines an investigation paper worth 20%. Schools choose 0607 when they intend students to continue to IB, and a tutor prepared for 0580 is not prepared for the investigation paper.

Pearson Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Foundation 4MA1/1F or Higher 4MA1/1H) | 50% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
| Paper 2 (Foundation 4MA1/2F or Higher 4MA1/2H) | 50% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
- Pearson tiers by Foundation and Higher rather than Core and Extended, and a calculator is allowed in both papers. The tier still sets a ceiling, so the entry decision matters as much as it does on Cambridge — but the non-calculator problem does not arise here.

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are the two IGCSE boards covered here. Some schools use OxfordAQA International GCSEs, which are examined differently again; if that is your board, tell us on the intro call and we will confirm tutor availability for your specification before you book.
What IGCSE Mathematics covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.
Number
Types of number, sets and Venn diagrams · Powers, roots, indices and surds · Standard form, estimation, and upper and lower bounds · Fractions, ratio, proportion and rates · Percentages, including repeated percentage change
Algebra
Algebraic manipulation, factorisation and algebraic fractions · Linear and quadratic equations · Simultaneous equations · Inequalities · Direct and inverse proportion
Sequences, functions and graphs
Sequences · Function notation, composite and inverse functions · Drawing and interpreting graphs of functions · Coordinate geometry: gradient, midpoint and equations of straight lines · Differentiation (Cambridge 0580 Extended and Pearson 4MA1 Higher)
Geometry and mensuration
Angles, polygons and geometrical constructions · Circle properties and circle theorems · Similarity · Perimeter, area, arcs and sectors · Surface area and volume of solids
Trigonometry
Pythagoras’ theorem · Trigonometry in right-angled triangles · Sine and cosine rules and the area of a triangle · Graphs of trigonometric functions
Vectors and transformations
Transformations of shapes · Vector notation and arithmetic · Vector geometry
Statistics and probability
Averages, range and interquartile range · Statistical charts and scatter diagrams · Cumulative frequency and histograms · Probability of combined events and tree diagrams · Conditional probability
Where IGCSE Mathematics marks are usually lost
Right answers with the working missing
Cambridge states plainly that when a question asks for working, a correct final answer without a clearly communicated method cannot earn full marks. Students who do steps in their head, or tap them into a calculator without writing them down, lose marks even when the answer is right — and when a slip does creep in, nothing on the page shows the method that might still have earned credit.
Rounding halfway through a calculation
Accuracy rules cost marks quietly. Cambridge expects non-exact answers to three significant figures unless the question says otherwise, exact answers in surd form or in terms of π when asked, and more accuracy carried through the working than the final answer needs. A student who rounds an intermediate value and then builds on it ends up slightly out, which can be enough to lose a mark.
Hand arithmetic that falls apart under pressure
Since the 2025 change, students taking Cambridge 0580 sit a paper without a calculator at both tiers, and International Mathematics 0607 has a non-calculator paper too. Fractions, negative numbers, surds, standard form and long multiplication then have to be done by hand, quickly and cleanly. Pearson allows a calculator in both papers, so students switching between boards or past papers must know which rule applies.
How we teach IGCSE Mathematics
A tutor first confirms the syllabus and the tier — Cambridge 0580 Core or Extended, 0607, or Pearson 4MA1 Foundation or Higher — because each sets a different grade ceiling and a different content list. Work then targets fragile topics in the order they block others: algebraic manipulation before functions, for example, and ratio before similarity. Topics are practised in mixed sets, because exam questions rarely announce what they are testing, and multi-step problems are broken down aloud until the student can plan them unaided. For Cambridge students, regular non-calculator work rebuilds arithmetic fluency. Past papers are marked against the official mark schemes, so students see where method and accuracy marks are won and lost, and learn to set out working in a way an examiner can credit.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
