IGCSE Environmental Management Tutoring, Cambridge International

IGCSE Environmental Management sits between geography and biology, and its papers are built on source material the student has never seen: a map, a table or a short account of a place, to be read, processed and judged in the exam room. Cambridge has also revised the syllabus for the 2027 exams, adding fieldwork content and dropping the recommended case studies students used to lean on.

Short answer

IGCSE Environmental Management is offered online, one-to-one.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 95 per lesson; lessons are booked singly or in packages.

How IGCSE Environmental Management is assessed, board by board

This page covers one specification for this subject: Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management (0680). It is set out below from the board's own document. If your school enters you with a different board, tell us on the intro call and we will work from that board's specification instead.

  • Untiered — every candidate sits the same two papers and A* is reachable from them. Pearson’s International GCSE range does not include Environmental Management, so a school offering it is offering the Cambridge syllabus.

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are the two IGCSE boards covered here. Some schools use OxfordAQA International GCSEs, which are examined differently again; if that is your board, tell us on the intro call and we will confirm tutor availability for your specification before you book.

What IGCSE Environmental Management covers

The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.

  • Natural resources

Formation of rocks · Extraction of rocks, ores and minerals · Sustainable management of rocks, ores and minerals · Energy resources and their conservation · Fracking

  • Land

Soils and crop growth · Food production and crop yield · Soil erosion and its management

  • Water

Water sources and supply · Water pollution and water-related diseases · Marine aquaculture · Oil pollution · Plastic pollution

  • The atmosphere and human activities

The structure and composition of the atmosphere · Climate change: causes, impacts, reducing carbon footprints and adaptation · Acid rain · Ozone depletion

  • Ecosystems, biodiversity and fieldwork

Ecosystems · Forest ecosystems · Managing biodiversity · Fieldwork investigations: sampling strategies and techniques

  • Natural hazards

Earthquakes and volcanoes · Tropical cyclones · Flooding · Drought

  • Human population

Population density, distribution and structure · Human population size · Managing human population size

Where IGCSE Environmental Management marks are usually lost

  • Repeating the source instead of using it

Most questions hang on source material, and many students copy figures or sentences back without doing anything with them. The marks go to processing the data — working out a percentage change, comparing two places, spotting the anomaly — and then linking it to an environmental principle. A description that never leaves the source, or an explanation that ignores it, rarely earns full credit.

  • Fieldwork methods nobody could follow

Planning questions want a method someone could actually carry out: the sampling strategy, the technique, where and how often to sample, what to keep constant and how to stay safe. “Take samples randomly” earns little unless it says how the random points are chosen. Since the revision, practical method questions sit in the second paper, and the syllabus names the techniques students must know.

  • One-sided verdicts on management strategies

Extended questions often ask whether a strategy — a protected area, a water-supply scheme, a population policy, a carbon tax — is effective. Many students list advantages and stop. Command words such as discuss and justify want both sides weighed, a conclusion and the evidence behind it; an answer that never reaches a judgement, or reaches one without support, caps its own mark however much the student knows.

How we teach IGCSE Environmental Management

A tutor works from the syllabus for the 2027 exams rather than older notes, because Cambridge restructured the topics and added new sub-topics: fracking, plastic pollution, sustainable management of rocks and minerals, and fieldwork investigations. Each topic is taught as a chain — the natural process, the human impact, then the strategies used to manage it and their limits. Since the papers rely on source material, most lessons use unseen extracts: reading a graph, processing the numbers, then applying a principle to a place the student has never studied. Fieldwork is practised on paper, from writing a hypothesis to choosing between random and systematic sampling, quadrats and transects, and evaluating the method. Practice answers are checked against Cambridge mark schemes, with close attention to command words.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

It draws on both. Ecosystems, biodiversity, soils and climate change overlap with biology; natural hazards, water supply and population overlap with geography. What makes it a subject of its own is the management side: almost every topic ends with strategies and how well they work. Students strong in either subject usually find half the course familiar and the evaluative writing new.

Cambridge revised the syllabus for first examination in 2027. Topics were renamed and restructured, new sub-topics were added on fracking, plastic pollution, sustainable management of rocks and minerals, and fieldwork investigations, and the recommended case studies were removed. Both papers were renamed, and practical method questions are now confined to the second paper. Older revision guides remain useful, but not as a complete map of what is examined.

The exam brings its own context: questions are based on source material, and the single-country context of the old second paper has gone. A few real examples still help, because they make principles concrete and give an extended answer something solid to draw on. The skill a tutor trains is applying ideas to whatever place the source describes, rather than forcing a memorised example onto it.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 100; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 95 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
