IGCSE Literature in English Tutoring, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel
IGCSE Literature rewards an argument about how a writer creates meaning, not a retelling of what happens, and students who know their texts well still lose marks by narrating them. The rules on books in the exam room also differ by board and by paper, so revision has to separate the texts that must be remembered from those that will be open on the desk.

How IGCSE Literature in English is assessed, board by board
2 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.
Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Poetry and Prose (open text) | 50% | 1 hour 30 min | 50 marks | open text and essay |
| Paper 2: Drama and Unseen (open text) | 50% | 2 hours | 50 marks | open text, unseen material and essay |
| Component 3: Coursework — An alternative to Paper 2: two assignments, roughly 1,000 words each | 50% | Assessed in school | 50 marks | coursework |
- Open text: clean copies of the set texts go into the exam room. That does not make quotation less important — it makes selecting the right quotation quickly the skill being tested, and students who have not practised with the book in front of them lose time hunting.

| Component 2: Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts | 40% | 1 hour 30 min | 60 marks | closed text and essay |
| Component 3: Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts (coursework) — An alternative to Component 2, where the school offers it | 40% | Assessed in school | — | coursework |
- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
- Closed text, unlike Cambridge: nothing goes into the exam room. Quotation has to be memorised, and a student moving between the two boards mid-course is changing not just the texts but the memory load.

What IGCSE Literature in English covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.
Poetry
Set poems from a prescribed anthology or collection · Language, imagery, form and structure · Tone, voice and mood · Informed personal response to a poem
Prose
Close study of a set novel or set short stories · Characters, relationships and themes · Narrative voice and structure · Essay questions on the whole text
Drama
Modern drama set texts · Shakespeare and other plays from the literary heritage · Dramatic methods: dialogue, staging and structure · Characters, conflict and themes in performance
Unseen texts
Responding to an unseen poem · Literary prose extracts · Critical commentary under time pressure
Writing about literature
Knowledge of the text through reference and quotation · The writer’s methods and intentions · Maintaining a critical style · Informed personal engagement
Where IGCSE Literature in English marks are usually lost
Retelling the story instead of answering
An answer that walks through the plot in order shows knowledge and little else. Both boards reward analysis of the writer’s methods — language, structure, form, dramatic choices — tied to the exact wording of the question. A response that makes a clear point in each paragraph, supports it with a short reference and explains it outscores a longer one that summarises events with quotations attached.
Learning quotations for the wrong kind of paper
Whether a text may go into the room depends on board and paper. Cambridge’s poetry and prose paper and its main drama paper are closed-book, with only the relevant passages printed, while its Drama (Open Text) paper allows clean copies. Pearson’s poetry and modern prose component is closed-book, but its drama and literary heritage paper is open-book. Each case needs a different quotation strategy.
Treating the unseen as a puzzle with one answer
Unseen tasks — Pearson’s unseen poem, Cambridge’s critical commentary paper — reward a reading that is tentative, supported and developed, not a search for a hidden meaning. Students who panic and paraphrase line by line lose the marks for analysis. Those who decide what the text seems to be doing, then test that idea against imagery, form and tone, write with control.
IGCSE Literature in English coursework
Both boards let a school replace one examined component with coursework. Cambridge’s portfolio has two assignments, each on a different complete text, and one of them may be an empathic response to a prose or drama text. Pearson’s non-examined Component 3 consists of two essays on teacher-devised assignments, one on a modern drama text and one on a literary heritage text. A tutor helps the student read those texts in depth, understand the assessment criteria and practise on different questions, while feedback on the assessed drafts stays at the general level both boards allow.
A tutor can explain the criteria, question a draft and point to what is weak. The research, the writing and every decision in it stay the student’s own, as the awarding body’s rules require.
How we teach IGCSE Literature in English
A tutor begins with the school’s set texts and route, because both vary: Cambridge publishes its set texts by examination year, and both boards offer coursework in place of one examined component. Each text is read closely, chapter by chapter or scene by scene, and then reorganised by character, theme and method so the student can answer whatever question appears rather than the one they hoped for. Extract-based questions are practised from the passage outwards, and essays are planned briefly before they are written. For closed-book papers the student builds a small bank of flexible quotations; for open-book papers, lessons rehearse finding the right line quickly in an unmarked copy. Unseen poems and prose extracts are practised regularly, not left until the final weeks.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
