SAT Preparation for Students in Ghana

College Board runs the SAT at test centres in Ghana on its international weekend dates. This page sets those dates against WASSCE, the WASSCE entry period and US application deadlines, so the SAT is sat when it clashes least with school exams. Lessons are live online and taught in English.

SAT dates for 2026–27, and where to sit them in Ghana

When this page was checked on 8 October 2026, College Board’s test centre search listed centres in Ghana for every remaining weekend date of the 2026–27 calendar, in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Agona Swedru. Most are in Greater Accra, so students elsewhere should plan the journey as well as the date. Centres and seats change; check the search before you register.

The ID you need at a Ghanaian test centre

For students testing in Ghana, College Board accepts only a valid passport showing your name, photograph and signature, or a valid Ghana Card. The ID must be the original, physical document: digital IDs and photocopies are refused, and the SAT Student ID Form is not valid outside the United States. A student who travels to another country to sit the SAT must bring a passport. Check that the Ghana Card or passport is valid on test day before you pick a date.

An SAT timeline leading up to WASSCE

WAEC Ghana sets WASSCE for school candidates in the third year of Senior High School, and this timeline works back from that. The SAT dates are College Board’s 2026–27 dates, so the spring dates fit a student sitting WASSCE in 2028 and the autumn dates one sitting it in 2027; the pattern repeats each year. The WASSCE dates are from 2026, because WAEC had not published its 2027 timetable when this page was checked.

  1. The year before SHS 3: diagnostic and plan

Start with the free full-length diagnostic, taken in Bluebook conditions. It gives a starting score and the question types costing points, and the plan is built from it — usually a few months of steady work alongside school.

  2. March to June, before SHS 3: a first sitting

For a student who sits WASSCE in 2028, the 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027 SAT dates fall a year before WASSCE, with no WASSCE papers to sit. A first score in hand by June leaves the months before the final year for the weakest question types.

  3. Before SHS 3: the US list and the re-sit decision

With a real score, the US list becomes concrete: which universities require a test again, which are test-optional, and the latest test date each one accepts. That decides whether a second sitting is needed, and which date it should be.

  4. SHS 3, September to November: entries and early deadlines

Schools register WASSCE candidates between September and November. The same weeks hold the 7 November SAT, whose registration closes on 23 October 2026, and the early US deadlines: 1 November for both MIT’s Early Action and Harvard’s Restrictive Early Action.

  5. December and January: the last sitting and regular deadlines

The 5 December 2026 SAT, with registration by 20 November, is the last date MIT accepts for Regular Action, since tests must be sat before 31 December; Harvard also accepts December SAT scores for Regular Decision. Regular applications are due on 1 January at Harvard and 4 January at MIT.

  6. April to June: WASSCE

In 2026 WASSCE projects, practicals and orals were scheduled by WAEC between 7 April and 8 May, and the timetabled papers ran from 21 April to 19 June, all after the US regular deadlines, so a US application goes in on the school record so far. No timetabled paper fell on a Saturday, but the May and June SAT dates sit inside the exam season.

Which SAT dates suit each school route in Ghana

Most students in Ghana finish school with WASSCE, while others follow Cambridge, IB or American programmes. Each route has its own exam season, and the SAT works best outside it.

School routeFinal examsSAT dates that sit clear of them

English tests alongside the SAT

Whether a US university also wants an English test is its own decision, and the answer changes the autumn of SHS 3.

  • Each US university sets its own rule

MIT, for example, strongly recommends an English test for applicants who have used English for fewer than five years or who do not speak it at home or at school, and lists TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Cambridge English and the Duolingo English Test. A student schooled in English may fall outside that recommendation; other universities word it differently.

  • After the SAT, not against it

MIT accepts English test scores for Regular Action through the January test dates, later than the December SAT. Where an English test is needed, it can follow the last SAT sitting instead of crowding the WASSCE entry period.

  • UK and Canadian applications in parallel

A student applying to the UK or Canada as well must meet each university’s English requirement, often with IELTS or another accepted test; some UK universities, Manchester among them, accept a strong WAEC English grade instead. The Ghana page sets out where IELTS can be sat.

  • Self-reported scores

MIT does not require official SAT or English test scores at the application stage and verifies them on enrolment. Check what each university on your list accepts before ordering official score reports.

How SAT preparation works

Every lesson is live, online and 90 minutes long, scheduled in your own time zone. Lessons are taught in English, the language the exam is sat in.

  1. Free intro call

Fifteen minutes with an advisor, at no cost and with no obligation.

  2. Diagnostic

You sit a free full-length diagnostic in the real exam format before any lesson is booked. It produces a starting score and, more usefully, an error profile: which question types are costing marks, whether the problem is content or timing, and which sections need a specialist. The plan is written from that rather than from an estimate. It is taken online at a time you choose, so nobody has to travel to a centre to find out where they stand.

  3. Written plan

You receive a written plan built from your starting point and your test date: which SAT sections come first, how many lessons that realistically takes, and when full practice tests enter. Nobody is sold a fixed number of lessons before the gap is known.

  4. Lessons and review

Each lesson ends with set work and a target for the next one. Families receive progress notes, and the plan is re-read against every new score rather than followed blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Yes. When checked on 8 October 2026, College Board’s test centre search listed centres in Ghana for every remaining 2026–27 weekend date, in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Agona Swedru. Registration is on College Board’s own site; seats at popular centres can go before the deadline, so register as early as your plan allows.

Yes. For centres in Ghana, College Board accepts a valid Ghana Card or a valid passport with your name, photograph and signature. It must be the physical document: digital IDs and photocopies are refused, and the SAT Student ID Form is not valid outside the United States. A student testing in another country needs a passport.

Not at every university. MIT takes tests sat before 30 November for Early Action, so the 7 November 2026 SAT still counts there; Harvard would like results by the end of October for Restrictive Early Action but accepts the November series. Both applications are due on 1 November. Check each university’s own testing page for the year you apply.

Not in 2026: WAEC Ghana’s final WASSCE timetable put every timetabled paper on a weekday, and the SAT is sat on Saturdays. Projects, practicals and orals were scheduled separately by WAEC between 7 April and 8 May, so check those with your school. The 2027 timetable was not published when this page was checked, and the May and June SAT dates still fall in the exam season.

It depends on the university. MIT strongly recommends an English test only for applicants who have used English for fewer than five years or who do not speak it at home or at school; other US universities set different rules. For UK and Canadian applications, check each university’s English requirement, since some, such as Manchester, accept a strong WAEC English grade.
