IELTS Preparation for Students in Nigeria

Students in Nigeria book IELTS for different reasons: a UK degree, a foundation programme, a Canadian university, nursing registration abroad. Each one points to a different version of the test. This page sets out which version fits which route, where each is taken in Nigeria, and when to sit it around WASSCE and application deadlines.

Which IELTS to book, by purpose

Nigeria is not on the list of countries whose nationals GOV.UK exempts from the English requirement, so a Nigerian student usually has to prove their English for a UK Student visa. How depends on the level of the course, and other countries and regulators set rules of their own.

PurposeTest to bookWhat the official rule says
A UK degree (bachelor’s or above)IELTS Academic, or the version the university namesThe university may assess your English itself, at a level equivalent to CEFR B2. That is why some accept a high WAEC English grade and others ask for IELTS.
A UK course below degree level (ask whether your foundation programme is one)IELTS for UKVIWithout a qualification that proves your English, the Student visa needs a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at CEFR B1: for IELTS for UKVI, at least 4.0 in each skill.
Admission to a Canadian universityIELTS Academic or another test the university listsEach university sets its own English requirement for admission.
Work in Canada after graduating (post-graduation work permit)IELTS General TrainingApplications made since 1 November 2024 need proof of English: CLB 7 in all four skills after a university programme, CLB 5 after a college programme, with results under two years old.
Nursing or midwifery registration in the UK (NMC)IELTS Academic (the NMC also accepts OET)At least 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing. Scores from two sittings within 12 months can be combined, under conditions the NMC sets.

Where IELTS is taken in Nigeria

IDP lists IELTS test centres in Abuja, Benin City, Enugu, Ibadan, Lagos and Port Harcourt, with several in Lagos, and several are labelled as computer-delivered. IELTS announced in March 2026 that it would stop offering the paper-based test from mid-2026, with the timing set market by market, so check the format when you book.

IELTS for UKVI is a separate booking. The UK government’s list of approved test centres, updated in October 2026, includes IELTS for UKVI centres in Abuja, Benin City, Lagos and Port Harcourt, among them centres run by the British Council and by IDP. UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an approved IELTS for UKVI centre.

Most IDP centres in Nigeria also offer IELTS One Skill Retake: a candidate who sat IELTS on computer can retake one skill within 60 days. Confirm first that the university, regulator or visa route accepts it. IRCC, for one, does not accept it for Express Entry.

An IELTS timeline for a Nigerian student starting in September 2027

This works back from a UK or Canadian start in September 2027. The WASSCE dates are the 2026 dates, because WAEC had not published the 2027 timetable when this page was checked.

  1. Now: confirm the version for every choice

List each university and the visa route, and note which IELTS each asks for, the overall band and the minimum in each skill. If one course is below degree level, that course decides the version: IELTS for UKVI.

  2. 15 October 2026 and 13 January 2027: UCAS deadlines

The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses is 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026; for most other courses it is 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027. Check whether each university wants an IELTS score with the application or later, as a condition of the offer.

  3. November to March: the main window for IELTS

For a student in the WASSCE year, the months before the exam season are the clearest time to prepare and sit IELTS. Leave room before April for a second sitting, or a One Skill Retake where it is accepted.

  4. April to June: WASSCE first

In 2026 WASSCE ran from 21 April to 19 June. An IELTS sitting inside those weeks takes revision time from both; if a score is still missing, the weeks after the last paper are the better slot.

  5. June to August: the offer conditions and the CAS

The score goes to the university to meet the English condition of the offer. A UK university also issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that the visa application needs, so keep your documents ready for it.

  6. From six months before the course: the visa

From outside the UK you can apply for a Student visa up to six months before the course starts, and a decision usually comes within three weeks. Apply with the same IELTS for UKVI result, if your course needed one.

Points that catch applicants out

  • IELTS Online is not for visas

IELTS Online, taken from home, exists only for IELTS Academic, and IELTS itself advises sitting the test at an authorised centre for visa and immigration purposes. For admission, check that each university accepts it before booking.

  • A WAEC English grade only goes so far

Where a UK university accepts a high WAEC English grade, that can cover a degree-level Student visa, because the university assesses English itself. It does not cover a course below degree level, and IRCC asks for test results, not school grades.

  • Academic and General Training are not interchangeable

IRCC names IELTS General Training, not IELTS Academic, for the post-graduation work permit and for Express Entry, while universities usually ask for Academic. A student who needs both versions should plan two separate sittings.

  • Scores have a shelf life

IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years, IRCC refuses results older than that, and the NMC counts only tests taken in the two years before it assesses an application. Sit the test with the deadline it serves in mind.

How IELTS preparation works

Every lesson is live, online and 90 minutes long, scheduled in your own time zone. Lessons are taught in English, the language the exam is sat in.

  1. Free intro call

Fifteen minutes with an advisor, at no cost and with no obligation.

  2. Diagnostic

You sit a free full-length diagnostic in the real exam format before any lesson is booked. It produces a starting score and, more usefully, an error profile: which question types are costing marks, whether the problem is content or timing, and which sections need a specialist. The plan is written from that rather than from an estimate. It is taken online at a time you choose, so nobody has to travel to a centre to find out where they stand.

  3. Written plan

You receive a written plan built from your starting point and your test date: which IELTS sections come first, how many lessons that realistically takes, and when full practice tests enter. Nobody is sold a fixed number of lessons before the gap is known.

  4. Lessons and review

Each lesson ends with set work and a target for the next one. Families receive progress notes, and the plan is re-read against every new score rather than followed blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

They usually need some proof of English, because Nigeria is not on the list of countries whose nationals GOV.UK exempts from the English requirement. For a degree, the university may assess your English itself, and some accept a high WAEC English grade. Below degree level, the visa needs a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI, unless you already hold one of the qualifications GOV.UK accepts instead.

Yes. When checked in October 2026, the UK government’s list of approved test centres included IELTS for UKVI centres in Abuja, Benin City, Lagos and Port Harcourt. The list changes regularly, so check it before booking, and book through the official IELTS channels only.

For admission, IELTS Academic or whichever test the university lists. For the post-graduation work permit and for Express Entry, IRCC asks for IELTS General Training, taken in person, with results less than two years old when you apply.

Before, if the deadlines allow. The months from November to March leave room for a second sitting and keep the test out of the WASSCE weeks, which ran from 21 April to 19 June in 2026. If a score is still needed after that, sit it once the last paper is done.

Yes. Lessons are live online and taught in English, so they work wherever you are. The test itself is sat at an IELTS centre, booked directly with IELTS; we do not run test centres.
