IELTS Preparation for Students in Kenya

For a student in Kenya applying abroad, the harder IELTS question is often which version to take: IELTS Academic, General Training or IELTS for UKVI, each tied to a different route. This page matches the version to the route, shows where each is taken in Kenya, and fits the test around KCSE.

Which IELTS a student in Kenya needs

Kenya is not on the list of countries whose nationals GOV.UK exempts from the English requirement, so Kenyan students usually have to prove their English for a UK Student visa. At degree level, the university may assess it itself, at a level equivalent to CEFR B2, which is how some universities can accept a high KCSE English grade instead of a test. Below degree level, the visa needs a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at CEFR B1; for IELTS, that means IELTS for UKVI with at least 4.0 in each skill.

The difference matters most for KCSE students. Some UK universities ask KCSE holders to complete a foundation programme before Year 1, as the University of Manchester does, so ask the provider whether that programme counts as below degree level and which IELTS it accepts. Beyond UK admissions, Canada asks for IELTS General Training after graduation and for Express Entry, and the UK nursing regulator, the NMC, accepts IELTS Academic or OET, not General Training.

An IELTS timeline for a Kenyan student starting in September 2027

This works back from a UK or Canadian start in September 2027, for a student sitting KCSE in 2026. The KCSE dates come from KNEC’s 2026 timetable.

  1. Now: match each choice to a version

Write down each university and the visa route, with the IELTS version, overall band and minimum per skill each one asks for. A single course below degree level is enough to make IELTS for UKVI the version to book.

  2. By 15 October 2026: the early UCAS deadline

The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses is 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026, days before KCSE orals begin. If you are applying to them, check now whether an English score is needed at the application stage.

  3. 19 October to 20 November 2026: KCSE first

KCSE orals and practicals begin on 19 October, the first written papers are on 28 October and the last paper is on 20 November 2026. Keep IELTS out of those weeks: a test sat in the middle of KCSE takes revision time from both.

  4. Late November to January: the main window for IELTS

Once KCSE is over, the weeks before the main UCAS deadline, 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027, are the clearest time to sit IELTS. Leave room for a second sitting, or a One Skill Retake where it is accepted.

  5. February to August: offer conditions and the CAS

The score goes to each university to meet the English condition of the offer. A UK university also issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that the visa application needs.

  6. From six months before the course: the visa

A Student visa application from outside the UK can be made up to six months before the course starts, and the decision usually comes within three weeks. If your course needed IELTS for UKVI, that is the result to use.

Which version for which route

  • Nursing and midwifery in the UK

The NMC accepts IELTS Academic and OET, and no other test. With IELTS Academic it asks for at least 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing, and allows scores from two sittings within 12 months to be combined, under its own conditions.

  • Working in Canada after graduating

For the post-graduation work permit, IRCC asks for IELTS General Training, taken in person: CLB 7 in all four skills after a university programme, CLB 5 after a college programme.

  • Permanent residence in Canada

Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training, not IELTS Academic and not a One Skill Retake. Results must be less than two years old both when you complete the profile and when you apply for permanent residence.

  • A UK degree with the university’s own English check

Where a UK university accepts a high KCSE English grade or its own assessment, that can cover a degree-level Student visa. It does not help with IRCC, which asks for test results.

Book against the deadline, not the calendar

IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years, IRCC refuses results older than that, and the NMC counts only tests taken in the two years before it assesses an application. A score sat for university entry in 2026 will not serve a Canadian work permit or a nursing application several years later, so sit each test for the deadline it serves.

How IELTS preparation works

Every lesson is live, online and 90 minutes long, scheduled in your own time zone. Lessons are taught in English, the language the exam is sat in.

  1. Free intro call

Fifteen minutes with an advisor, at no cost and with no obligation.

  2. Diagnostic

You sit a free full-length diagnostic in the real exam format before any lesson is booked. It produces a starting score and, more usefully, an error profile: which question types are costing marks, whether the problem is content or timing, and which sections need a specialist. The plan is written from that rather than from an estimate. It is taken online at a time you choose, so nobody has to travel to a centre to find out where they stand.

  3. Written plan

You receive a written plan built from your starting point and your test date: which IELTS sections come first, how many lessons that realistically takes, and when full practice tests enter. Nobody is sold a fixed number of lessons before the gap is known.

  4. Lessons and review

Each lesson ends with set work and a target for the next one. Families receive progress notes, and the plan is re-read against every new score rather than followed blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

They usually need some proof of English, because Kenya is not on the list of countries whose nationals GOV.UK exempts from the English requirement. For a degree, the university may assess your English itself, and some accept a high KCSE English grade. Below degree level, the visa needs a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI, unless you already hold one of the qualifications GOV.UK accepts instead.

When checked in October 2026, the UK government’s list of approved test centres included IELTS for UKVI centres in Nairobi, Mombasa and Eldoret. The list is updated often, so check it before booking, and book through the official IELTS channels only.

You can, but it is rarely a good trade. In 2026, KCSE orals and practicals begin on 19 October, the first written papers are on 28 October and the last paper is on 20 November. Sitting IELTS before the orals or after the last paper keeps both exams in their own weeks.

IDP lists IELTS One Skill Retake at its Nairobi centre. It must be taken within 60 days of a full IELTS on computer, and not every organisation accepts it: IRCC does not for Express Entry. Check with each university or regulator before booking.

Yes. Lessons are live online and taught in English, so they work wherever you are in Kenya. You sit the test itself at an IELTS centre, booked directly with IELTS; we do not run test centres.
