IELTS or PTE Academic: Which English Test Suits You?
IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are both accepted by many universities, and both test listening, reading, writing and speaking. They differ most in how speaking is assessed, how the parts are organised and how the overall score is calculated. This page sets the official facts side by side, so the choice can rest on the student’s strengths and destination.

Figures are those published by IELTS for IELTS Academic and by Pearson for PTE Academic.
| Criterion | IELTS Academic | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | IELTS, jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment | Pearson |
| Structure | Four separate sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking | Three parts: Speaking and Writing; Reading; Listening |
| Questions | Listening: 40 questions; Reading: 40 questions; Writing: two tasks; Speaking: a three-part interview | 22 question types across the three parts |
| Total time | 2 hours 45 minutes | About 2 hours, as Pearson describes it; part timings vary slightly from one test to another |
| How skills are scored | Each skill is assessed in its own section | Some tasks are integrated: one answer can count towards more than one skill |
| Score scale | 0–9 for each skill and overall, in whole and half bands; the overall is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band | 10–90 overall and for each skill; the overall score is not an average of the skill scores |
| Speaking | A face-to-face interview with an examiner, recorded; by video call with an examiner in IELTS Online | Spoken into a microphone at the computer and recorded; there is no examiner in the room |
| Marking | Listening and Reading answers are marked and converted to bands; Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained IELTS examiners | AI scoring, which Pearson describes as combined with human expertise |
| Where it is taken | On computer at a test centre (paper delivery is being withdrawn from mid-2026, market by market); IELTS Online from home for IELTS Academic only | On a computer at an authorised PTE test centre only; PTE Academic cannot be taken at home |
| Results | Usually within a few days on computer at a centre; 6–8 days for IELTS Online | Usually within 2 business days; in some cases up to 5 business days |
| Validity | IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years; a university may accept older results | Valid for two years from the test date |
| Version for UK visas | IELTS for UKVI | PTE Academic UKVI, with the same content, format and scoring as PTE Academic |

Who each test tends to suit
IELTS Academic often suits
Students who speak more naturally to a person than to a microphone, and who like each skill tested in its own section, with long reading passages and a full-length written argument. IELTS Online also lets students sit the Academic test from home where their universities accept it.
PTE Academic often suits
Students who are comfortable speaking into a microphone with a smooth, even delivery, and who prefer one shorter sitting, taken entirely on computer at a test centre. Because some tasks count for more than one skill, it rewards students who can switch quickly between short task types.
Either may suit
Students whose universities accept both and whose practice results are close. Then centre locations, dates and how fast the result is needed usually decide it.
How universities and visa rules treat the two tests
Each university sets the tests it accepts and its own minimum for each one, usually an overall score and a minimum per skill. Because the scales differ, do not convert a score yourself: read the requirement the university publishes for IELTS and for PTE Academic separately, and check how recent a score it accepts.
Visa rules are separate and are set by each government. For UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test, the Home Office’s approved list includes both IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI; the ordinary IELTS Academic and PTE Academic bookings are different products. IELTS states that IELTS Online should not be used for visa and immigration purposes. Rules for other countries differ, so confirm the current requirement with the immigration authority of the country you are going to.
How to decide
List what each university and visa route accepts
Note the tests, the minimum scores on each scale, any per-skill minimums, whether IELTS Online is accepted and whether a UKVI version is needed.
Try official material for both
Use official sample material from IELTS and Pearson under timed conditions. For PTE, our free full-length diagnostic in the real exam format can serve as that trial.
Think about the speaking format
An interview with an examiner and recorded answers to a computer call on different strengths. Notice in which format you speak more fluently and with fewer pauses.
Check centres, dates and results against your deadline
Find the nearest centre for each test on the official sites, and allow time for results and a possible re-sit before the earliest application or visa deadline.
Commit to one test
The two tests reward different techniques, so preparing for both at once usually slows progress. Choose one and plan backwards from the test date.
Preparation differs more than the content
The English needed for both tests is much the same; the techniques are not. IELTS preparation tends to centre on essay structure against the four Writing criteria and on extending spoken answers naturally in conversation with an examiner.
PTE preparation tends to centre on the integrated tasks that feed several skill scores, on speaking fluently into a microphone without long pauses or restarts, and on the exact response format each written task expects. A plan built for one test transfers only partly to the other.
