IB Diploma Tutoring for Students in Kenya

An IB Diploma student in Kenya works to the IB’s calendar, not KNEC’s, and applies to Kenyan universities on different terms from a KCSE student. This page sets out those terms, the UK deadlines in Kenyan time and a timeline built around the May session. Lessons are live online, taught in English and booked in East Africa Time.

The IB Diploma inside Kenya’s school landscape

The Diploma is taught in Kenya by IB World Schools, several of them in Nairobi, and the IB’s own school directory lists May examinations for the Diploma schools there that we checked. KNEC lists the IB Diploma among the foreign examinations whose conduct in Kenya it monitors with the awarding body, but the papers, marking and results are the IB’s. Use the IB’s “Find an IB World School” search to check a school’s authorisation and programmes.

That independence matters at application time. Kenya’s national system is in the middle of a change, with the KCSE set to end in 2027 under KNEC’s plan, but KUCCPS still places students on KCSE grades. An IB student therefore plans two applications that run on different rules: one to Kenyan universities, some of which, USIU-Africa among them, read the Diploma against the KCSE, and one abroad, where the Diploma is a qualification universities already list.

How an IB Diploma is treated when you apply from Kenya

The rules below come from the bodies and universities themselves. Each Kenyan university sets its own requirements, so treat USIU-Africa and Manchester as examples, not as the rule everywhere.

RouteWhat the official source saysWhat it means for an IB student
KUCCPS placement (Government-sponsored places)Placement is based on KCSE examination grades onlyIB results do not enter KUCCPS placement; apply to the university itself and ask about its route for international qualifications
Kenyan university admission, USIU-Africa as an exampleKCSE C+ and above or equivalent; holders of other international high-school qualifications submit their certificates to the Commission for University Education or another recognised body for equation to the KCSEAsk each university which body it uses and what it needs, and allow time for the equation once certificates are issued
Credit for Higher Level results, USIU-Africa as an exampleAdvanced placement credit for each Higher Level result of 4, 5, 6 or 7, up to a set maximumHL grades can matter after admission too; ask each university whether it gives credit
UK universities, Manchester as an exampleThe IB is considered for direct entry to Year 1 if predicted grades meet the course’s minimum; KCSE applicants need a recognised foundation programme firstPredicted grades drive the offer, and applications go through UCAS

Sources: KUCCPS, frequently asked questions; USIU-Africa, admission requirements and international applicants pages; University of Manchester, entry requirements for Kenya. Checked 8 October 2026. Confirm current rules with each university, including whether it uses the Commission for University Education, KNQA or another body for foreign qualifications.

An IB timeline for a student in Kenya applying for 2027

This is the order for a student finishing the Diploma in the May 2027 session and applying both in Kenya and to the UK. The UCAS deadlines are for 2027 entry; IB and university dates for 2027 should be confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator and each university.

  1. First year of the Diploma: subjects against destinations

Check the HL and SL subjects against the courses on the list, in Kenya and abroad, before the choice is fixed. A Kenyan university may read the Diploma through an equation to the KCSE, as USIU-Africa does, and a UK course reads it through its own subject requirements.

  2. End of the first year: predictions and written work

Internal tests and mocks feed the predicted grades that UCAS applications rely on. Internal assessments and the Extended Essay move from plan to draft over the same months.

  3. 15 October 2026: UCAS for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine

The deadline for these courses is 18:00 UK time, which is 20:00 in Kenya while the UK is on summer time. It also covers most veterinary and dentistry courses.

  4. 13 January 2027: the main UCAS deadline

The equal-consideration deadline for other 2027 courses is 18:00 UK time, which is 21:00 in Kenya, because the UK is back on GMT by January.

  5. Late April into May: the May examination session

The IB’s May session begins in late April and runs into May. Revision is planned backwards from your own exam timetable, which the IB coordinator issues.

  6. Early July: results, then Kenyan applications

The IB releases May-session results in early July, staggered by time zone. UK offers are confirmed on them, and Kenyan applications can move on to any equation step the university asks for once the Diploma and its results are in hand.

What lessons from Kenya take into account

  • East Africa Time, all year

Kenya stays on UTC+3 with no clock change, so a weekly lesson slot holds through both years of the Diploma. UK deadlines move by an hour in Kenyan time when UK clocks change at the end of October.

  • Two application systems at once

In the first year, lessons target the school assessments that predicted grades rest on, because UCAS applications are made on predictions; a Kenyan university application may instead turn on final results and any equation that follows them.

  • Your school’s calendar, not a generic one

Internal deadlines for internal assessments, the Extended Essay and TOK are set by each school. Plans start from your school’s dates and the session it sits.

  • Lessons in English

Lessons follow the English-language papers and mark schemes. A tutor who can also explain in French or Arabic is confirmed case by case, never promised.

What we do not claim

We are not affiliated with the IB, KNEC, KUCCPS, the Commission for University Education or any university, and we have no partnership with any Kenyan school. We cannot equate a qualification or speak for an admissions office; we teach the Diploma and help you plan around the rules those bodies publish.

How IB preparation works

Every lesson is live, online and 90 minutes long, scheduled in your own time zone. Lessons are taught in English, the language the exam is sat in.

  1. Free intro call

Fifteen minutes with an advisor, at no cost and with no obligation.

  2. First-lesson assessment

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

  3. Written plan

After the first lesson you receive a written plan: which units come first, how many lessons that realistically takes before your exams, and where past papers enter. It is revised as school covers new material.

  4. Lessons and review

Each lesson ends with set work and a target for the next one. Families receive progress notes, and the plan is re-read against every new score rather than followed blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Not for KUCCPS placement. KUCCPS states that its placement of students is based on KCSE examination grades only, and it places students in Government-sponsored programmes. An IB Diploma holder applies to the Kenyan university itself, which sets out how it treats international qualifications. Confirm the route with the university before results day.

Universities set their own rules, so ask each one. USIU-Africa, for example, asks for KCSE C+ or equivalent and requires holders of other international high-school qualifications to have their certificates equated to the KCSE through the Commission for University Education or another recognised body. It also gives credit for Higher Level results of 4 and above.

The Kenyan Diploma schools we checked in the IB’s directory list May examinations. The May session begins in late April and runs into May, and a school can also sit in November, so confirm your session with your IB coordinator. May-session results come out in early July, released at staggered times by time zone.

Yes. The University of Manchester, for example, considers IB students in Kenya for direct entry to Year 1 if their predicted grades meet the course minimum, while KCSE applicants need a recognised foundation programme first. For 2027 entry, UCAS deadlines are 15 October 2026 and 13 January 2027, at 18:00 UK time.

With a free intro call, which is a conversation about your subjects, levels, school deadlines and destinations, not a test. The first paid lesson then includes an assessment built from your recent marked work and past-paper questions. Lessons are live online, taught in English and booked in East Africa Time.
