IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Tutoring, SL and HL

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches puts strong emphasis on constructing, communicating and justifying mathematical arguments, so knowing a method is not enough: the working has to show it. The course also switches between a paper where no calculator is allowed and papers where a graphic display calculator is required, and students need fluency in both modes.

Short answer

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is offered online, one-to-one.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 95 per lesson; lessons are booked singly or in packages.

IB group classes are private groups of three or more friends, who agree the start date with us.

From USD 95 per lesson

Your lessons are taught by Burak Kara, who teaches IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches.

How IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is assessed

External papers set and marked by the IB, and an internal assessment marked by your teacher and moderated by the IB. Standard Level and Higher Level differ in length, weighting and, at HL, in the extra paper or component. Figures are from the IB’s own subject brief, linked below.

Where IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches marks are usually lost

  • Slips on the no-calculator paper

Paper 1 is written without any calculator, and it is not designed around heavy arithmetic, yet many marks are lost there to small manipulations: a sign dropped when expanding, a logarithm law misapplied, a surd left unsimplified, an exact trigonometric value misremembered. Students who have leaned on the GDC all year find their algebra slower and less reliable than they assumed.

  • A correct answer with no working

The guide states that full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working, and that method marks can rescue a wrong answer only if the method is written down. On the calculator papers this catches students who type an equation into the GDC and write only the result. The equation being solved, or the function being graphed, belongs on the page.

  • Proofs that assume the result

“Show that” questions and proofs lose marks when students work backwards from the given answer, treat what must be proved as a starting point, or stop before a clear concluding statement. At HL, induction arguments often skip the base case or the final sentence, and the guide notes that stating a counterexample alone is not sufficient: it has to be shown to fail.

The IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches internal assessment

The internal assessment is the exploration: an individual written piece of mathematics on a topic the student chooses. It is assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, and the guide expects mathematics commensurate with the level of the course; textbook-style work that reproduces readily available mathematics without the student’s own perspective is unlikely to reach the higher levels. A tutor can help a student find a topic with genuine mathematical depth, check that they understand every step they intend to use, and discuss notation and structure so that the mathematics reads clearly from start to finish.

A tutor can explain the criteria, question a draft and point to what is weak. The research, the writing and every decision in it stay the student’s own, as the awarding body’s rules require.

How we teach IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

A tutor builds the course on its spine of functions and calculus, connecting algebra, trigonometry, sequences and series, and statistics and probability to it as they arise. Lessons alternate between non-calculator practice, where accurate algebra and exact values are drilled, and GDC practice, where the student learns to use the calculator efficiently and to record what it was used for. Students learn early what the formula booklet provides and what they must still know. Every solution is marked the way IB examiners mark, with method, accuracy and reasoning credited separately, so students see where marks are gained and lost. Proof is taught steadily through the course rather than as a separate topic. HL students practise the extended problems of Paper 3, which start from syllabus content and build towards a generalisation or the interpretation of a context.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

The IB describes Analysis and Approaches as a course for students who enjoy constructing mathematical arguments and solving problems, with a strong emphasis on justifying arguments; one of its papers is also taken without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation focuses on mathematics in practical contexts and modelling, with extensive use of technology. Some university courses state which one they expect, so check the requirements of the degrees you are considering before deciding.

Considerably. The IB says HL students need strong algebraic skills and the ability to understand simple proof. HL adds topics such as complex numbers and proof by induction, contradiction and counterexample, and a third paper of extended problem-solving questions. SL students meet the same style of reasoning in a narrower syllabus, so HL suits those who are comfortable spending a long time on one problem.

Yes, but not for students sitting the exams in 2027 or 2028. The current guide was first assessed in 2021, and the IB has published a brief for a new Analysis and Approaches course with first assessment in 2029, which keeps a focus on functions and calculus. Until then, lessons follow the current guide, its papers and its exploration criteria.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 100; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 95 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
