IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation Tutoring, SL and HL
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is sometimes seen as the gentler maths course, but its papers are built on real contexts and a graphic display calculator is required throughout, so the difficulty moves from computation to judgement. Students lose fewer marks on arithmetic than on choosing the right model or test, showing the method behind a calculator answer and saying what a result means.
Short answer
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is offered online, one-to-one.

How IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is assessed
External papers set and marked by the IB, and an internal assessment marked by your teacher and moderated by the IB. Standard Level and Higher Level differ in length, weighting and, at HL, in the extra paper or component. Figures are from the IB’s own subject brief, linked below.
International Baccalaureate
| Component | SL: weight and length | HL: weight and length | What it involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 40% · 1 hour 30 min | 30% · 2 hours | Calculator required. Compulsory short-response questions. |
| Paper 2 | 40% · 1 hour 30 min | 30% · 2 hours | Calculator required. Compulsory extended-response questions. |
| Paper 3 (HL only) | HL only | 20% · 1 hour | Calculator required. Two compulsory extended questions. |
| Internal assessment | 20% | 20% | The exploration: an individual written piece of mathematics on a topic the student chooses. |

Where IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation marks are usually lost
Answers copied off the GDC with no method
The IB says that a correct answer with no working may not earn full marks, while method marks can rescue an answer that goes wrong. A student who runs a regression or a test on the calculator and writes down only the final number leaves the examiner nothing to credit when that number is wrong. Writing the model, equation or test used takes seconds and protects marks.
Hypothesis tests without a conclusion in context
Chi-squared tests and t-tests are carried out on the calculator, so the marks lie in everything around the number: null and alternative hypotheses stated properly, the p-value compared with the significance level, and a conclusion written in the language of the context. A bare “reject the null hypothesis”, or a conclusion claiming the test has proved something, leaves marks behind.
Modelling without judging the model
Questions on linear, exponential, quadratic and other models ask students to fit a function, use it to predict, and then judge whether the prediction is reasonable. Marks slip away when students extrapolate far beyond the data without comment, ignore what a parameter means in the situation, or round inconsistently from one part to the next, so that later answers drift from the mark scheme.
The IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation internal assessment
The internal assessment is the mathematical exploration: a written piece on a topic the student chooses, assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. The mathematics used should match the level of the course. A tutor can help a student check that a topic offers enough mathematics, discuss which statistical or modelling methods suit their data, explain what each criterion rewards and question a draft where the reflection is thin. Errors are pointed out rather than corrected, in the spirit of the IB’s guidance to teachers.
A tutor can explain the criteria, question a draft and point to what is weak. The research, the writing and every decision in it stay the student’s own, as the awarding body’s rules require.
How we teach IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation
A tutor teaches Maths AI with the calculator in hand from the first lesson, because every paper requires it and fluency with its menus — regression, the equation solver, statistical tests, matrices at HL — frees time for thinking. Each topic is anchored in a context: a data set, a population, a set of sites on a map. The student first predicts what a sensible answer looks like, then calculates, then explains the result in a sentence an examiner would accept. Past-paper questions are marked against IB mark schemes, with particular attention to the method lines that earn marks even when the answer is wrong. Because SL and HL share a core, HL students also work on the topics only HL covers, such as Markov chains and differential equations, and on the longer problems of Paper 3.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
