AP Statistics Tutoring for the May Exam
AP Statistics needs little advanced algebra, but it asks for something many strong maths students have never practised: written statistical reasoning. Free-response answers are judged on their explanations — an inference answer, for instance, must name the method, check its conditions and state a conclusion in the context of the study — so a student who can calculate but cannot explain what a p-value or an interval says about the data loses points on questions they have in fact solved.
Short answer
AP Statistics is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.
A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.
Group classes next begin on 25 September 2027.

How AP Statistics is assessed
Set and scored by College Board and reported on the 1–5 AP scale. Each university sets its own rule on which scores earn credit or placement. Component names are as College Board prints them.

AP Statistics · AP Central exam page
| Component | Share of score | Length | What it involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section I: Multiple Choice | 50% | 1 hour 30 min | 42 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, each with 4 answer choices, including two 3-question sets (one on probability, random variables and probability distributions, one on regression). A graphing calculator with statistical functions, or the Desmos graphing calculator in Bluebook, is expected; from the 2027 exams, non-graphing calculators are not allowed. |
| Section II: Free Response | 50% | 1 hour 30 min | 4 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, each worth 10 points and typed in Bluebook: one on Practices 1 and 2 (formulating questions, collecting data), one on Practices 3 and 4 (analysing data, interpreting results), an inference question (hypothesis test or confidence interval), and one combining Practices 2, 3 and 4 across several content areas. |
- The whole exam is taken in College Board’s Bluebook app.
- 2027 exam date: 11 May 2027.

Where AP Statistics marks are usually lost
Conclusions with no context
A conclusion such as “reject the null hypothesis” or “the mean lies between the two bounds” is incomplete. College Board defines “in context” as tying each statistical result back to the real situation it came from: which population, which variable, which parameter. Students also lose credit by claiming a test proved the null hypothesis true, when a large p-value only means the data give no convincing evidence against it.
Confusing random selection with random assignment
The course framework itself singles out this mix-up. Random selection of a sample is what allows a result to be generalised to a population; random assignment of treatments is what allows a cause-and-effect conclusion in an experiment. Students who swap the two terms, or who claim causation from an observational study, lose the point even when the rest of the answer is sound. Precise vocabulary is part of the mark.
Describing a distribution by its centre alone
When asked to describe or compare distributions of quantitative data, students are expected to address shape, centre and variability, and to note unusual features such as outliers, all in context. College Board’s own guidance calls an answer focused only on the centre incomplete. A comparison also needs comparative language — “greater than”, “similar to” — rather than two separate descriptions placed side by side.
How we teach AP Statistics
A tutor teaches AP Statistics as one process rather than a list of tests: pose an investigative question, decide how to collect data, analyse it and interpret the result — the four practices the revised course is built on. Each topic is learned through a short real study, so the student meets sampling, design and inference as decisions with consequences. Simulation comes before formulas, because it makes probability and sampling distributions concrete. Every week includes written answers marked against College Board’s scoring guidelines, with particular attention to conditions and to conclusions in context. Because the May 2027 exam is fully digital, the student also practises typing answers and statistical notation, and uses the Desmos graphing calculator in Bluebook as well as a handheld one. Older released questions are adapted where they cover topics the revision removed.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
