AP Psychology Tutoring for the May Exam

AP Psychology has a reputation as a gentle AP, but the course revised for the 2024–25 school year treats psychology as a science: research methods run through every unit, and both free-response questions are built on summaries of real studies. Students who learn definitions without practising how to apply them to a study, a graph or a scenario find the exam much harder than the textbook.

Short answer

AP Psychology is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.

Group classes next begin on 25 September 2027.

How AP Psychology is assessed

Set and scored by College Board and reported on the 1–5 AP scale. Each university sets its own rule on which scores earn credit or placement. Component names are as College Board prints them.

Where AP Psychology marks are usually lost

  • Naming the wrong research method

The Article Analysis Question begins by asking which research method a study used. College Board’s 2025 Chief Reader Report describes points lost by students who called an experiment a correlational study or described the topic of the research instead of its method, and warns that naming a second method contradicts the answer. The clue lies in the summary’s details: who was assigned to which condition, and what was measured.

  • Quoting results without interpreting them

When a question asks what a statistic shows, copying the means from the summary earns nothing. The answer must say what the difference means — which group did better, on what measure, in which direction — and the Chief Reader Report records answers that read the result backwards. The same precision applies to variables: the point needs the measurable definition the researchers used, not a general description of the topic.

  • Defining a concept instead of using it

In the Evidence-Based Question, students make a claim, support it with evidence from the sources and explain why the evidence supports it, drawing on psychological concepts. College Board’s readers stress that a definition alone does not earn the point for applying a concept: it has to be worked into the explanation. Evidence should come from a study’s results, not from who took part or how it was run.

How we teach AP Psychology

A tutor teaches AP Psychology as a science course with a large vocabulary, not as a vocabulary course. Each unit — from the brain, sleep and sensation to memory, development, social psychology and psychological disorders — is learned through studies: what the researchers did, what they measured and what the result shows. Research methods are revisited in every unit, so that recognising an experiment or a correlational study, its variables and its ethical safeguards becomes automatic. Multiple-choice practice uses scenarios, tables and graphs rather than bare definitions. For the free response, the student types answers to College Board’s published Article Analysis and Evidence-Based Questions under time, and the tutor marks them against the scoring guidelines point by point, so the student sees exactly which wording earned or missed each mark.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Only in part. College Board revised the course for the 2024–25 school year to follow the American Psychological Association’s recommendations: the content was reorganised into five units, health psychology and positive psychology were added, the endocrine system and moral reasoning were removed, and the free response became the Article Analysis and Evidence-Based Questions. Older books still explain much of the content, but their unit order, practice questions and essay advice no longer match the exam.

Little heavy calculation, but real fluency in reading results. The course asks students to calculate the mean, median, mode and range, to interpret these alongside standard deviation and percentile rank, to understand the normal curve and statistical significance, and to read tables and graphs from research. The free-response questions then ask what a result in a study summary shows. Students who also take AP Statistics usually find that the two courses reinforce each other.

On screen. AP Psychology is a fully digital exam taken in the Bluebook app: students answer the multiple-choice questions and type both free-response answers, and everything is submitted automatically at the end. Students who rarely type extended answers in English should practise doing so under time, and should try the Bluebook test preview beforehand so that the tools and the timer feel familiar on the day.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 70; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 65 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
