AP Macroeconomics Tutoring for the May Exam

AP Macroeconomics is a course of linked graphs: one policy change has to be traced from aggregate demand and supply into the money market, the loanable funds market and the foreign exchange market, in the right direction and with the right labels. Many lost marks come from one wrong arrow early in that chain, not from gaps in the content.

Short answer

AP Macroeconomics is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.

Group classes next begin on 25 September 2027.

Section I: Multiple Choice66.7%1 hour 10 min60 questions in 1 hour 10 minutes across the whole course. A four-function calculator (handheld, or the one built into Bluebook) is allowed in both sections; scientific and graphing calculators are not.
Section II: Free Response33.3%1 hour3 questions in 1 hour, including a 10-minute reading period: 1 long question worth half the section and 2 short questions worth a quarter each. You make and explain assertions about economic concepts, models and outcomes, carry out numerical analysis and draw graphs, by hand in a paper booklet.
  • Hybrid exam: answers are entered in Bluebook for multiple choice and handwritten in a paper booklet for free response.

The AP Macroeconomics syllabus

Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper and in the mark scheme.

  • Unit 1: Basic Economic Concepts (5–10%)

Scarcity · Opportunity cost and the Production Possibilities Curve · Comparative advantage and gains from trade · Supply and demand · Market equilibrium, disequilibrium, and changes in equilibrium

  • Unit 2: Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle (12–17%)

The circular flow and GDP · Unemployment · Price indices and inflation · Real vs. nominal GDP · Business cycles

  • Unit 3: National Income and Price Determination (17–27%)

Aggregate demand · Short-run and long-run aggregate supply · Equilibrium and changes in the Aggregate Demand-Aggregate Supply Model · Fiscal policy

  • Unit 4: Financial Sector (18–23%)

Financial assets · Definition, measurement, and functions of money · Banking and the expansion of the money supply · Monetary policy

  • Unit 5: Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies (20–30%)

The Phillips Curve · Money growth and inflation · Government deficits and national debt · Crowding out · Economic growth

  • Unit 6: Open Economy—International Trade and Finance (10–13%)

Balance of payments accounts · Exchange rates and the foreign exchange market · Effects of changes in policies and economic conditions on the foreign exchange market · Changes in the foreign exchange market and net exports · Real interest rates and international capital flows

Where AP Macroeconomics marks are usually lost

  • Graphs that are not fully labelled

Free-response questions ask for correctly labelled graphs, and the scoring guidelines read them literally: both axes, every curve, the equilibrium and the direction of the shift. The graphs are drawn by hand in a paper booklet, so the habit has to be built on paper. A correct idea on an unlabelled graph usually earns nothing, and it is the most avoidable loss on the exam.

  • Mixing up the two interest-rate graphs

The money market and the loanable funds market both put an interest rate on the vertical axis, and students regularly draw the wrong one, or mix the nominal rate of the first with the real rate of the second. The same confusion appears between real and nominal GDP, and between a change in the price level and a change in the inflation rate.

  • Losing the thread of a policy chain

Multi-part questions ask what happens to output, the price level, interest rates, the exchange rate and net exports after a single shock or policy. Students often get the first effect right and then contradict it two parts later, or describe the long-run adjustment when the question asked about the short run. Each step needs its own reasoning, not a guess at the pattern.

How we teach AP Macroeconomics

Lessons build the course as one connected model rather than six separate units. The tutor starts from aggregate demand and aggregate supply, then adds the money market, loanable funds and the foreign exchange market one at a time, and every lesson ends with a chain question: here is a shock, now trace it through each graph. Students draw by hand from the first week, because that is how the free-response section is answered. Multiple-choice practice targets the definitional questions — what counts in GDP, which type of unemployment, what the central bank’s tools do — that are quick marks when known and costly when guessed. Where a student also takes AP Microeconomics, the shared basics are taught once and the time goes to the harder macro material.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Many students do, and the first unit of each, Basic Economic Concepts, covers much of the same ground. They are separate exams on different days with mostly different content, so preparing for both is not twice the work, but it is not half either. A tutor can plan the two together, teach the common ground once and separate the revision as May approaches.

No. The course teaches general models of output, prices, money and trade, and they apply broadly to any economy with a central bank and its own currency — Egypt, Kenya or Ghana as much as the United States. What the exam requires is the course’s own terms and graphs. Local examples help a student understand a concept in lessons, but in an answer the model named in the question comes first.

Little beyond arithmetic, but the arithmetic is specific: the spending and money multipliers, real and nominal values, price indices and growth rates. A four-function calculator is permitted on the exam. The harder part is interpretation — knowing what a number means for the graph — so lessons treat each calculation as a step in an economic argument rather than as a stand-alone sum.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 70; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 65 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
