AP Environmental Science Tutoring for the May Exam

AP Environmental Science draws on biology, chemistry, geology and geography at once, and the exam asks students to apply them to unfamiliar scenarios, data and investigations rather than to recall facts. Its calculations — percentages, rates, unit conversions — must be shown step by step with units, and from 2027 they are done without a graphing calculator.

Short answer

AP Environmental Science is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.

Group classes next begin on 18 September 2027.

How AP Environmental Science is assessed

Set and scored by College Board and reported on the 1–5 AP scale. Each university sets its own rule on which scores earn credit or placement. Component names are as College Board prints them.

ComponentShare of scoreLengthWhat it involves
Section I: Multiple Choice60%1 hour 30 min80 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, individual and in sets: 3–5 sets on quantitative data (tables, charts, graphs), 3–5 on qualitative information (models, representations, maps) and 2 on text-based sources. A four-function (with square root) or scientific calculator, or the Desmos scientific calculator in Bluebook, is allowed in both sections; from 2027, handheld calculators with storage, such as graphing calculators, are not.
Section II: Free Response40%1 hour 10 min3 questions in 1 hour 10 minutes, each worth 10 points and built on an authentic environmental scenario: Design an investigation (from a model or visual representation), Analyze and interpret quantitative data (a table, chart or graph) and Analyze an environmental problem doing calculations, where working must be shown. Each question also asks you to propose solutions to environmental problems.
  • The whole exam is taken in College Board’s Bluebook app.

Where AP Environmental Science marks are usually lost

  • Answers without working or units

The Calculate task verb requires the setup, the substituted numbers and correctly labelled units, and the course description is blunt: without appropriate units, a calculation is meaningless even when the arithmetic is right. Students who type only a final number, or lose track of units halfway through a conversion, give away points they had otherwise earned. Dimensional analysis, written out line by line, is the habit to build.

  • Proposing solutions that are too vague

Every free-response question asks for solutions to environmental problems, and “propose a solution” means a specific measure based on evidence or knowledge. “Reduce pollution” or “raise awareness” does not do what the verb asks. A mechanism does: permeable pavement to cut urban runoff, scrubbers on coal-fired power stations, drip irrigation in place of flood irrigation, together with a drawback where the question asks for one.

  • Designing an investigation with no control

The investigation question draws on the course’s scientific experiments practice: identifying a testable hypothesis, the independent and dependent variables, the control group and the factors to hold constant. Students who describe an interesting activity without naming what is changed, what is measured and what is kept the same lose those points. Lab and field work during the year, for which the course sets aside class time, is the best preparation.

How we teach AP Environmental Science

A tutor teaches Environmental Science as applied science rather than as a list of issues. Each unit starts from the mechanism — how nitrogen moves through soil, why an age-structure diagram predicts growth, how a thermal inversion traps smog — and ends with a free-response question set in a real scenario. Calculation practice runs all year in short, regular doses, with working and units written out on a scientific or four-function calculator, since graphing calculators are not allowed from 2027. African settings make good case studies: dryland degradation in the Sahel, the fisheries of Lake Victoria, air quality in Lagos or Cairo. Released questions are scored with College Board’s guidelines, so the student learns what “propose a solution” and “justify” require.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

For May 2027 College Board allows a four-function calculator with square root or a scientific calculator, and Bluebook includes the Desmos scientific calculator; calculators are allowed in both sections. Handheld calculators with storage, such as graphing calculators, are no longer permitted. Students used to a graphing calculator should switch now and practise percentage change, rates and unit conversions on the device they will use.

Indirectly, yes. No particular labs are required and no lab report is scored, but College Board expects AP classes to spend at least a quarter of class time on hands-on lab and field investigations, and the exam asks students to design an investigation and analyse data. A student with little practical experience should practise designing simple experiments — choosing variables, controls and measurements — on paper and, where possible, outdoors.

Both, and more: College Board describes environmental science as interdisciplinary, drawing on geology, biology, chemistry and geography. Ecosystems and populations lean on biology, Earth systems on geology and climate, pollution on chemistry, and land use on geography. Few topics are hard on their own; the challenge is connecting them, for example tracing how fertiliser use affects soil, rivers, fish and human health in a single answer.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 70; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 65 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
