AP Computer Science A Tutoring for the May Exam
AP Computer Science A is a Java course in which students must predict exactly what code does — loops, method calls, recursion, references to objects — and then write methods and whole classes from a written specification. Students who learned to program by trial and error, changing code until it runs, are often weakest at what the exam tests most: reasoning about code line by line.
Short answer
AP Computer Science A is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.
A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.
Group classes next begin on 27 September 2027.

How AP Computer Science A is assessed
Set and scored by College Board and reported on the 1–5 AP scale. Each university sets its own rule on which scores earn credit or placement. Component names are as College Board prints them.

AP Computer Science A · AP Central exam page
| Component | Share of score | Length | What it involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section I: Multiple Choice | 55% | 1 hour 30 min | 42 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, mostly standalone, occasionally with 1–2 sets of 2 questions, covering all 5 computational thinking practices. You work out the code needed for a given output, trace what code produces, and analyse code for correctness, equivalence and errors. The Java Quick Reference is provided in Bluebook, and calculators are not allowed. |
| Section II: Free Response | 45% | 1 hour 30 min | 4 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, each asking you to write Java code, typed in Bluebook: Methods and Control Structures (7 points), Class Design (7 points), Data Analysis with ArrayList (5 points) and 2D Array (6 points). All 4 assess Practice 2: Develop Code. |
- The whole exam is taken in College Board’s Bluebook app.

The AP Computer Science A syllabus
Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper and in the mark scheme.
Unit 1: Using Objects and Methods (15–25%)
Using primitive data types including int, double, and Boolean · Evaluating arithmetic expressions in program code · Creating objects by calling constructors with and without parameters · Using String objects and methods · Using application program interfaces (APIs) and libraries
Unit 2: Selection and Iteration (25–35%)
Using conditional statements to execute different statements based on input values · Creating the same value using equivalent Boolean expressions · Representing iterative processes in code using for and while loops · Nesting loop and iteration statements · Informally analyzing run-times
Unit 3: Class Creation (10–18%)
Designing a class, including whether attributes are public or private · Setting an object’s attributes using constructors · Defining behaviors of an object using non-void, void, and static methods · Breaking problems into smaller parts by creating methods to solve individual subproblems
Unit 4: Data Collections (30–40%)
Traversing an array by accessing the elements using iteration statements · Representing collections of related object reference data using ArrayList objects · Traversing a 2D array by accessing the elements using nested iteration statements · Executing recursive methods · Searching and sorting using binary search and merge sort algorithms
Where AP Computer Science A marks are usually lost
Printing when the method should return
College Board’s scoring guidelines list the errors that cost a free-response answer its algorithm points: printing output the question did not ask for, returning a value from a void method, rewriting the given method header with different parameters, or changing data that should persist. These are habits carried over from classroom exercises rather than gaps in knowledge, and they cost marks on otherwise correct solutions.
Skipping elements while removing from an ArrayList
Removing items from an ArrayList inside a forward loop shifts every later element down one place, so the next element is skipped unless the index is adjusted or the loop runs backwards. The course framework names this risk directly, along with out-of-bounds errors. Similar slips appear in two-dimensional arrays when row and column indices are swapped. Each stays invisible until the student traces the loop on a small example.
Polishing syntax while the logic fails
Students often spend exam time worrying about semicolons and brackets. The scoring guidelines treat many such slips as minor — a missing semicolon where the structure is clear, = written for ==, length confused with size — while a missing step, or steps in the wrong order, costs the algorithm point. In the free-response section, complete and correctly ordered logic matters far more than perfect syntax.
How we teach AP Computer Science A
A tutor teaches Java by tracing before writing. Each new structure — conditionals, loops, String methods, objects, arrays, ArrayLists, two-dimensional arrays, recursion — is first traced by hand on short code segments, with a table of variable values, until the student can predict output reliably. Only then does the student write code for it, starting from a specification in the exam’s style: a scenario, a class, a method header and examples. Free-response practice uses released questions of every type the exam sets, scored with College Board’s guidelines so the student sees which points they earn and why. Answers are typed in a plain editor and checked by tracing, not by running them. Multiple-choice sets build speed in reading unfamiliar code and using the Java Quick Reference.
There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.
