A Level Sociology Tutoring, for Every Board
A Level Sociology turns familiar subjects — families, schools, crime, religion, the media — into arguments between theories, and marks depend on using those theories and named studies precisely rather than on general knowledge of society. Where the evidence should come from also differs: AQA states that its central focus is UK society today, while Cambridge International makes globalisation an A Level topic and lets schools add some family content to suit the local context, though that content is not assessed.

How A Level Sociology is assessed, board by board
3 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.
AQA
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods — Education 50 marks, methods in context 20, theory and methods 10 | 33.3% | 2 hours | 80 marks | short answer and extended response |
| Paper 2: Topics in Sociology — One topic from each of two option groups, 40 marks each | 33.3% | 2 hours | 80 marks | extended response |
| Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods — Crime and deviance 50 marks, theory and methods 30 | 33.3% | 2 hours | 80 marks | short answer and extended response |
- Theory and methods is examined inside papers 1 and 3 rather than on its own, which is why students who revise it as a separate unit at the end tend to run out of time for it.

| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Socialisation, Identity and Methods of Research | 25% | 1 hour 30 min | 60 marks | structured questions and essay |
| Paper 2: The Family | 25% | 1 hour 30 min | 60 marks | structured questions and essay |
| Paper 3: Education | 21% | 1 hour 15 min | 50 marks | structured questions and essay |
| Paper 4: Globalisation, Media and Religion | 29% | 1 hour 45 min | 70 marks | essay |
- The four papers are not equally weighted — Paper 3 is 21% and Paper 4 is 29% — and Paper 4 is essays only. This is the least symmetric of the four sociology specifications and the easiest to mis-plan.

Specifications are revised periodically. Each block links to the specification it was read from and gives the date it was checked; if your school has moved to a newer specification, that document takes precedence.
What A Level Sociology covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.

Where A Level Sociology marks are usually lost
Writing past the item
Many AQA questions open with an item and ask students to apply it. Answers lose marks when they deliver a prepared essay and never use the item, or quote it without developing the point. Reading the item for its hooks — a trend, a social group, a claim — and building a paragraph on each is a reliable method. OCR’s questions on source material reward the same close reading.
A methods answer with no context
AQA’s methods in context question asks how a research method would work for a particular issue in education, using the item. A generic list of the strengths and weaknesses of questionnaires earns little; credit comes from linking practical, ethical and theoretical points to the specific group and setting — pupils, teachers, parents, classrooms. Cambridge also asks students to evaluate a research method, and the same rule applies there.
Theories used as labels
Naming functionalism, Marxism, feminism or interactionism is not analysis. Students lose marks when theories appear as labels attached to a paragraph rather than as competing explanations tested against evidence. Stronger essays set one theory against another, use named studies to support or challenge each, and reach a judgement about which explains the issue best. At AQA, theory and methods is also examined in its own right inside the topic papers.
How we teach A Level Sociology
A tutor teaches each topic as a debate: the main theoretical positions, the studies that support them and the criticisms each faces, laid out on a single page the student can revise from. Research methods and theory run through every topic rather than being left to the end, which matters most at AQA, where theory and methods questions sit inside the topic papers. Contemporary evidence is collected as the course goes — UK statistics and policies for AQA, and for Cambridge, whose globalisation topic links the local and the global, examples from the student’s own society as well as others. Answers are planned to the board’s format: AQA’s item-based questions, OCR’s source-based and extended responses, Cambridge’s short questions and choice of essays. Full answers are written to time and marked against the board’s levels.
Your starting point is reviewed before the study plan is finalised. The exact method depends on the programme and is agreed on the intro call — for some students that means a timed section, for others it means reading a recent score report or a piece of marked work. We will tell you which applies to you before you book anything, rather than describing a process here that may not be the one you get.
