A Level Economics Tutoring, for Every Board
A Level Economics rewards a chain of reasoning more than a store of knowledge: a correct diagram and a correct definition earn little unless the answer shows, link by link, how a change works through a market or an economy and then judges whether it really would. The boards test that reasoning in different formats, from multiple choice and data response to case studies and unstructured essays.

How A Level Economics is assessed, board by board
4 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.

- This is a modular qualification: units are sat in January, June and October, can be taken in stages, and can be re-sat, with the best result counting. That changes how a two-year plan is built — and it is the main reason a Pearson student and a Cambridge student in the same class need different revision schedules.

Specifications are revised periodically. Each block links to the specification it was read from and gives the date it was checked; if your school has moved to a newer specification, that document takes precedence.

International Economics
Comparative advantage and the gains from trade · Exchange rates and the balance of payments · Globalisation, trade liberalisation and protectionism · Development economics and the role of institutions
Where A Level Economics marks are usually lost
Diagrams drawn but never used
Most analytical answers call for a diagram, and students often draw one correctly and then write as if it were not there. Analysis marks come from referring in the text to the shift, the new equilibrium and the areas the diagram shows. Unlabelled axes, curves shifted the wrong way and missing welfare areas lose marks even when the written argument is sound.
Evaluation that is only a list
Every board assesses evaluation, and it matters most in the longer questions. Students lose these marks by adding “however, it depends” or a list of limitations with no judgement. Evaluation means deciding which effect is likely to dominate, over what time period, under which conditions and for whom, and ending with a supported conclusion that answers the question actually asked.
Revising for essays, then meeting multiple choice
Multiple choice is part of the assessment at all four boards: in one AQA paper and one OCR paper, at the start of every Pearson Edexcel International A Level unit, and as whole papers at Cambridge International. Its questions turn on small calculations, precise definitions and diagram shifts, with wrong options built around common misconceptions. Essay revision does not train this; it needs its own timed practice.
How we teach A Level Economics
A tutor teaches economics as a sequence of mechanisms. A topic such as a rise in interest rates is drawn, explained link by link through borrowing, spending, the exchange rate and prices, and then evaluated: how large, how quickly, for whom, and what could stop it working. Lessons alternate between the board’s data-response questions, which train the reading of tables and charts under time pressure, and essay plans marked against the levels in the mark scheme. Multiple-choice practice runs alongside in short timed sets, with every wrong answer traced to the misunderstanding behind it. Examples come from economies the student knows, including their own, and are checked for accuracy before they go into an essay.
Your starting point is reviewed before the study plan is finalised. The exact method depends on the programme and is agreed on the intro call — for some students that means a timed section, for others it means reading a recent score report or a piece of marked work. We will tell you which applies to you before you book anything, rather than describing a process here that may not be the one you get.
