A Level Mathematics Tutoring, for Every Board
A Level Mathematics rewards fluent algebra above everything else: many of the marks lost in calculus, trigonometry or mechanics trace back to an algebraic slip or a missing line of working. The applied content is where the boards part company — compulsory statistics and mechanics with a large data set at AQA and OCR, chosen units or papers at Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International.

How A Level Mathematics is assessed, board by board
4 awarding bodies examine this subject, and they do not examine it the same way: different papers, different weightings, different practical arrangements. Find your board — it is printed on your school's timetable and on past papers — and read that block. Nothing on this page describes one board's paper as though it applied to all of them.
AQA
AQA A-level Mathematics (7357)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Pure mathematics only: proof, algebra, coordinate geometry, sequences, trigonometry, exponentials, calculus, numerical methods | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
| Paper 2 — Pure mathematics plus mechanics: vectors, kinematics, forces, moments | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
| Paper 3 — Pure mathematics plus statistics: sampling, data, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
- Every student sits the same three papers. Mechanics and statistics are compulsory and split across papers 2 and 3 rather than chosen — which is the main structural difference from Cambridge and Pearson, where the applied content is an option.

OCR
OCR A Level Mathematics A (H240)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Pure Mathematics (01) — Pure mathematics in a single section | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
| Paper 2: Pure Mathematics and Statistics (02) — Two sections of roughly 50 marks; statistics questions may use the pre-release large data set | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions, data response and pre-released material |
| Paper 3: Pure Mathematics and Mechanics (03) — Two sections of roughly 50 marks | 33⅓% | 2 hours | 100 marks | structured questions and problem solving |
- The same board also awards Mathematics B (MEI) (H640), which is examined differently. Check the specification code on your syllabus before assuming the structure above applies.
- The large data set is released before the exam and statistics questions are set in its context. Students who have not worked with it lose marks they could not recover in the exam room.

Pearson Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International A Level Mathematics (YMA01)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unit P1: Pure Mathematics 1 | 16⅔% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Unit P2: Pure Mathematics 2 | 16⅔% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Unit P3: Pure Mathematics 3 | 16⅔% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Unit P4: Pure Mathematics 4 | 16⅔% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Two applied units — M1 and S1, or M1 and D1, or M1 and M2, or S1 and D1, or S1 and S2 — each 1 hour 30 minutes | 33⅓% | 1 hour 30 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
- This is a modular qualification: units are sat in January, June and October, can be taken in stages, and can be re-sat, with the best result counting. That changes how a two-year plan is built — and it is the main reason a Pearson student and a Cambridge student in the same class need different revision schedules.
- Four pure units are compulsory and the two applied units come from a fixed list of pairs. A student who has taken M1 and S1 has not covered the same course as one who took S1 and S2, so "Edexcel Maths" on its own does not tell a tutor what to teach.

Cambridge International
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 — Compulsory for AS Level and A Level | 30% | 1 hour 50 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Paper 3: Pure Mathematics 3 — Compulsory for A Level | 30% | 1 hour 50 min | 75 marks | structured questions |
| Two applied papers — Paper 4 Mechanics, Paper 5 Probability & Statistics 1, Paper 6 Probability & Statistics 2 — each 1 hour 15 minutes and worth 20% | 40% | 1 hour 15 min | 50 marks | structured questions |
- The two applied papers are chosen, not fixed: Mechanics with Probability & Statistics 1, or the two statistics papers together. Two Cambridge students with the same grade can have sat different mathematics.

Specifications are revised periodically. Each block links to the specification it was read from and gives the date it was checked; if your school has moved to a newer specification, that document takes precedence.
What A Level Mathematics covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.
Pure Mathematics
Polynomials, rational expressions, partial fractions · Trigonometric identities and equations · Differentiation: chain, product and quotient rules · Integration: area, volume, antiderivatives, differential equations
Statistics
Statistical sampling and data presentation · Probability: independent and conditional events · Binomial and normal distributions · Hypothesis testing: one-sample tests, correlation
Mechanics
Kinematics: constant and variable acceleration · Newton's laws and dynamics · Moments and equilibrium · Kinetic and potential energy
Where A Level Mathematics marks are usually lost
Skipping lines of working
Mathematics mark schemes reward method, not only the final answer, and Cambridge states that no marks are awarded for unsupported answers from a calculator. Students who do steps mentally, or write only the final value, lose method marks when the answer is wrong — and on “show that” questions, where the result is printed in the question, the working is the only thing that can earn credit.
Counting on a formula sheet that lacks the formula
Every board supplies formulae, but not all of them. AQA expects students to recall the formulae and identities listed in an appendix of its specification, and Pearson Edexcel lists formulae students must know that will not appear in its booklet. Students who assume the sheet will rescue them meet a question built on a standard identity or derivative and cannot start it.
Treating statistics as button-pressing
Distributions and hypothesis tests are where calculator skill and written reasoning meet. Students find the probability correctly and then lose the marks for stating hypotheses in terms of the parameter, comparing the result with the significance level and writing the conclusion in context. At AQA and OCR, questions can also be set in the context of the large data set, which students are expected to know before the exam.
How we teach A Level Mathematics
A tutor first secures algebra — indices, surds, factorising, rearranging, working with fractions — because every later topic depends on it. Pure topics are then taught in a sequence where each builds on the last: functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and numerical methods, each with proof and modelling questions alongside routine ones. Applied content follows the board’s route: compulsory statistics and mechanics at AQA and OCR, including work on the large data set, or the units and papers chosen at Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge. Every session ends with exam questions written out in full, and the tutor marks the working as an examiner would. Calculator technique is taught to each board’s rules, since OCR allows graphical calculators and Cambridge does not.
Your starting point is reviewed before the study plan is finalised. The exact method depends on the programme and is agreed on the intro call — for some students that means a timed section, for others it means reading a recent score report or a piece of marked work. We will tell you which applies to you before you book anything, rather than describing a process here that may not be the one you get.
