A Level Environmental Science Tutoring, for Every Board
A Level Environmental Science borrows from biology, chemistry, geology and geography at once, and AQA, the board that awards it at full A Level, writes questions that move between them within a single answer. The hardest marks go to students who can design a sampling study, choose the right statistical test and then argue what the result means for a real environmental decision.

How A Level Environmental Science is assessed, board by board
This page covers one specification for this subject: AQA A-level Environmental Science (7447). It is set out below from the board's own document. If your school enters you with a different board, tell us on the intro call and we will work from that board's specification instead.
AQA
AQA A-level Environmental Science (7447)
| Component | Share of grade | Length | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 50% | 3 hours | 120 marks | short answer, extended response, data response and calculations |
| Paper 2 | 50% | 3 hours | 120 marks | short answer, extended response, data response and calculations |
- AQA is the only board awarding A-level Environmental Science. Cambridge International offers Environmental Management (8291), which is an AS Level qualification and not the same course — a school offering "Cambridge Environmental Science" at A Level is describing something that does not exist.

Specifications are revised periodically. Each block links to the specification it was read from and gives the date it was checked; if your school has moved to a newer specification, that document takes precedence.
What A Level Environmental Science covers
The syllabus areas most boards share. Which ones appear, in what order and on which paper differs by board and by specification code — your own specification is the final word. Topic names are left in English, as they appear on the paper.
Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Energy flow and food webs · Species diversity and conservation strategies · Habitat management and restoration
Pollution and Climate
Air, water and soil pollution · The greenhouse effect and global warming · Ozone depletion
Resource Management
Renewable and non-renewable energy · Water resource management · Sustainable Development Goals
Where A Level Environmental Science marks are usually lost
Choosing a statistical test out of habit
AQA expects students to select and use chi-squared, Student’s t-test, Spearman’s rank or Mann-Whitney U, and to calculate measures such as Simpson’s index of diversity. Many students learn one test well and apply it to every data set. Marks are lost when the test does not fit the data — a difference or a correlation, ranked or measured values — and when the conclusion ignores significance.
Naming a sampling method without justifying it
Research methods run through both papers: random or systematic sampling, transects along an environmental gradient, sample size, timing, and the number of samples needed for a significant result. Weak answers name a quadrat and stop. The marks go to the reasons — why this sample size suits this habitat, how bias is avoided, what a preliminary study would show — and they favour students who have used the equipment themselves.
Answering one topic when the question spans several
Both papers draw on the whole course, and the extended answers are written to test the links: an energy question that turns on land, water and wildlife, or a pollution question that needs chemistry and population ecology together. Students who revise topic by topic write accurate paragraphs about one area and miss the connections the mark scheme rewards. A long answer needs a plan before its first sentence.
How we teach A Level Environmental Science
A tutor teaches the course as one system rather than a list of chapters. Each section — the physical environment, energy resources, pollution, the living environment, biological resources and sustainability — is taught with its quantitative core: unit conversions, orders of magnitude, residence times, percentage change and diversity indices. Research methods are taught alongside the content, not saved for the end: the student designs a sampling plan for a real question, chooses a statistical test and explains what would make the data unrepresentative. Practice moves from short data questions to extended answers, planned first and marked against AQA’s published mark schemes. Where fieldwork at school has been limited, the tutor works from real survey data so the methods are understood, and helps the student plan what to observe when they do go into the field.
Your starting point is reviewed before the study plan is finalised. The exact method depends on the programme and is agreed on the intro call — for some students that means a timed section, for others it means reading a recent score report or a piece of marked work. We will tell you which applies to you before you book anything, rather than describing a process here that may not be the one you get.
