AP African American Studies Tutoring for the May Exam

AP African American Studies is examined largely through sources — texts, images, maps and data, many of them unfamiliar — so knowing the history is only half the work. The other half is reading a source quickly for its argument and context, and writing about it precisely under time pressure.

Short answer

AP African American Studies is offered online, one-to-one or in a group class.

A private lesson runs 90 minutes and starts at USD 65 per lesson; the group course runs 50 lessons of 90 minutes for USD 1,755, and a class never takes more than 6 students.

Group classes next begin on 27 September 2027.

ComponentShare of scoreLengthWhat it involves
Section I: Multiple Choice60%1 hour 10 min60 questions in 70 minutes, usually in sets of 3–4, each built on one or two sources. About half the sources are required sources from the course framework; the rest relate to required content but are not sources you will have studied directly.
Section IB: Individual Student Project—Exam Day Validation Question1.5%10 min1 question in 10 minutes: you answer in writing one of the project’s oral defence questions, analysing, reflecting on, comparing or evaluating at least one source you used for your Individual Student Project.
Section II: Short-Answer Questions18%40 min3 questions in 40 minutes, each in three or four parts: one based on a text source, one on a visual source and one on a broad thematic concept from the course. Answers are typed in Bluebook.
Section II: Document-Based Question12%45 min1 question in 45 minutes built on five documents offering different perspectives on a historical development or process. You state a defensible thesis, describe a broader historical or disciplinary context, support your argument with at least 3 of the documents and at least 1 further piece of specific evidence from outside them, and for at least 2 documents explain how their perspective, purpose, context or audience bears on your argument.
Individual Student Project8.5%—A 3-week research project during the course: you choose a topic and line of inquiry, analyse sources from several disciplines, then give a presentation and an oral defence to your teacher and class. Your teacher scores it with College Board’s rubric.

Where AP African American Studies marks are usually lost

  • Recognising the topic, missing the source

Multiple-choice sets and short-answer questions ask what a particular source argues, who produced it, for whom, and how it connects to a wider development. Students who recognise the topic and answer from general knowledge choose the plausible distractor. Reading the attribution, the date and the purpose of the source before looking at the questions is what changes this.

  • A DBQ that walks through the documents

The document-based question rewards a defensible thesis, historical context, use of several documents, evidence from beyond them and analysis of a source’s purpose or point of view. Essays that paraphrase each document in turn can be long and still collect few of those points, because none of the paraphrase is doing work for an argument.

  • Visual sources read literally

Short-answer questions and multiple-choice sets include photographs, artworks, maps and posters. Describing what is in the image earns nothing on its own; the credit goes to explaining what the image was made to do, for which audience, and how it reflects its moment. Students used to text-only history exams need deliberate practice with visual evidence.

AP African American Studies coursework

The Individual Student Project is a short research project completed during the course. The student chooses a topic and a line of inquiry, finds and analyses sources from several disciplines, then presents the findings to the teacher and class and answers the teacher’s questions in an oral defence. The teacher scores the project with College Board’s rubric, and on exam day a written question asks the student to return to at least one source they used. A tutor can help narrow the topic to something researchable in the time available, test the argument with hard questions and rehearse the defence; the research and the presentation stay the student’s own.

A tutor can explain the criteria, question a draft and point to what is weak. The research, the writing and every decision in it stay the student’s own, as the awarding body’s rules require.

How we teach AP African American Studies

Lessons run on sources. Each session pairs a stretch of the course — from the early African societies of the first unit through enslavement and resistance, Reconstruction and the movements of the twentieth century — with sources the student has not seen, and the student practises three moves the exam keeps rewarding: identify the claim, place it in context, explain its significance. Short-answer responses are written and rewritten against College Board’s scoring guidelines until each part answers exactly what it asks. The DBQ is built in stages: thesis and context first, then use of documents, then sourcing. For students in Africa, the opening unit often connects to history they already know; the tutor uses that as a way into the course, not as a substitute for its sources.

There is no separate diagnostic, because there is no single test that stands in for two years of a school syllabus. The first lesson is the assessment: the tutor works through your recent marked work, past-paper questions from your own specification, and the units your school has already covered, and reads current level, gaps, exam technique and where school work stands. It is a normal paid lesson and it teaches as it assesses.

Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

No. The first unit begins in Africa, with early African societies and the origins of the diaspora. College Board describes the course as interdisciplinary, with an emphasis on historical, literary, visual and data analysis, and it studies Black communities in the United States within the wider context of Africa and the African diaspora. The later units centre mainly on the United States, so students in Africa should expect a good deal of US history, law and culture that is new to them.

It is harder than for most APs. The Individual Student Project is completed during the course, scored by a teacher and counted in the AP score; a student with no project score entered by the deadline receives zero for that part. Before committing, ask the AP coordinator at the school that would administer your exam whether the project could be supervised and scored there. We can prepare you for the exam itself either way.

The course has required sources, and the exam also uses related ones students have not studied. Lessons keep a running file of the required sources with brief notes on author, date, purpose and argument, so revision means reviewing notes rather than rereading everything. Unseen-source practice runs alongside, because recognising a source is not the same skill as analysing one.

A single 90-minute lesson is USD 70; on the larger packages the rate falls to USD 65 per lesson.

No separate diagnostic: the first lesson is used to read the level against your own recent work. The free intro call beforehand is a conversation, not a test.
